I personally love it as a hobby and a passion, I don’t do it for monetary gain (although if knowing one language gives me that option, I’ll take advantage of it).

I’m currently learning Russian, Georgian and Icelandic. Anyone else here enjoy learning languages for fun? Or for any other reason?

I casually learned some Russian last summer and really enjoyed it. Kind of want to get back to it. I used Duolingo and Drops.

Duolingo is cool. I didn’t know that they offered Finnish on the desktop version. The accent on the Russian one is pretty spot-on

I'm terrible at them but I like duolingo and memrise. I figure it's a nice way to spend down time. I don't really expect to actually learn Portuguese or Russian or whatever but it's a way to keep my brain active.

Georgian and Armenian are some of the wildest alphabets I've ever seen

I never thought I'd want to learn other languages when I was younger, but when I was a student at LSU in the late 80's I was told that I wouldn't graduate unless I took two years of a foreign language.

I figured I'd take German. It'd be like English with different words. (Oooooh! I was wrong as hell! It kicked my arse!)

Then, I found out that if I wanted to go into Army Special Forces as an officer, I wouldn't even be considered before I made the rank of captain unless I had TWO foreign languages, and one of the two had better be something they really wanted. So, Russian was added to my curriculum. I went into Russian classes with the mindset of "I don't know nuthin', so TEACH me." And it came pretty easily, and it also helped me in my German studies.

Then I found out that I really enjoyed studying foreign languages because you not only learn a language, but you learn a whole new thought process.

My third was Koine (New Testament) Greek. That one was pretty tough. And since then, now that I'm working in commercial construction, Spanish has been my fourth to learn.

I never woulda thunk it, but learning a new language is probably one of the most interesting and fulfilling things I have ever done.

(But Icelandic??? You must be a true glutton for punishment!)

I was like that as a younger man. I still remember the Cyrillic alphabet. I don't exactly "read Russian" but there enough cognates between Russian and English that I can figure out a lot of written Russian.

Last thing I need is to understand what kinda shite people are talking about me when they switch to other languages.
