Successful or fail? How’d you go about it?

I have several friends south of here and they say it's dying out with the older generation. It will be sad that part of Louisiana history will be gone.

I can understand the gist of it when my grandparents speak it to each other and their friends, but I could never grasp speaking it.
But like most people from the region, I sprinkle a few words and phrases in my everyday English. I have to purposefully make an effort not to in professional settings.

Everything you need to know is in Ed O's binder.

Cajun French is the same as regular French minus a few words.

Never attempted to learn it, but I know older people who speak it..
A friend of mine's mom told us one time that when she was a kid (she grew up in pierre part), she was originally taught to speak cajun french but when she started school, they were teaching everyone English and there was a point where if she went to school and spoke cajun french she would get in trouble, but if she went home and spoke English she would get in trouble as well..

I have heard that different dialects in the same region have a hard time communicating.
For instance a St Amant native and Ville Platte native could maybe get the gist, but dialect really keeps the conversation from flowing.
Reference was from a former neighbor that was an Army translator (French) stationed down here. Her French was useless from what she told.
