I had a similar experience.
My mom passed away last August and there were several days in the weeks before she passed, she would only speak French. I was extremely glad i could converse with her during those times and would sometimes start the conversations in french.

I worked for Crown drilling company as a roughneck during summer vacation from college in the late 60's. Every single person spoke French except me. They spoke a broken English that was really hard for me to understand. Felt like I was working in a foreign country. The BooRay games were a real shocker. They were the friendliest people I think I've ever been around.

Started taking a cajun french class at USL at night. I'm pissed I never learned more when I was younger. I only know the basics.
