Back in the late 80's early 90's I went to the State Trooper camp. Same thing, you got a beef with someone Troopers, who doubled as camp councelors, got out the gloves and you went at it.

There was a black kid who was much taller than everyone. We called him Knuckles Nucleous. He held his hands up way high and punched down on you, it was wierd as shite but effective.

I went 1 round with a kid just for fun, he was kinda fat and got winded not even a minute into the round. I kept hitting him with body shots. Troopers stopped it after about 2 minutes..... I was glad, my arms were about to fall off. That 2 minute round was the beggining and the end of my boxing career.

I would definitely monitor the amount of time sparring. They key is not letting going "50%" escalate into going "100%" 2 minutes into a round. It is amazing how the core strength in martial arts / boxing translates into the other major sports (basketball, football ...). Their overall ability in other sports drastically increases due to training on the mat.

Back in the early ‘80s at Holy Cross they held a random boxing tournament. A ring was set up in the gym, and if you had a beef with someone you could go a few rounds with them. There were some awesome fights. Can’t imagine this being allowed at any school in today’s world, but it was great.
probably all the kids who came from Norman's gym in Old Arabi...

A UT student who collapsed at the 38th Annual Ace Miller Memorial Boxing Tournament Friday evening, has died, according to WBIR.

Joseph “Tanner” Wray, junior studying aerospace engineering from Lawrenceberg, TN, was boxing for Chi Phi fraternity in the junior light heavyweight class when he collapsed in his corner after the second round. Sources say that medical personnel attended to him by providing an oxygen mask and performing CPR. After 10 minutes, an ambulance arrived and transported Wray to UT Medical Center, where he died.
