I’ll start - I was fishing a stream up in Canada roughly 10 years ago. Lots of people on this stream with me fishing so I didn’t feel threatened since there was so much activity around. After a few casts I notice some shouting & all the others fishing had moved a good ways away from me. At this moment I look right and roughly 20-30 yards away was a huge grizzly hulking into the stream with me. I sat there in awe and honestly terror and watched this beast catch some fish. Nearly shite myself as I’m pretty freaked out by bears.

Any stories y’all have?

I saw one shite in the woods once. It really was a life changing event. I could finally answer the question.

Weekly.

Mainly black bear, but we have brown bears and glacier bears too.

How do you typically respond? Do you use bear spray on them or just play it cool and let them pass?

Nope. I did go to Philmont once which is a Boy Scout camp in New Mexico. It is 140,000 acres and supposedly had an average of 1 bear per square mile. I was there for 11 days and never saw a bear.

Griz and three cubs tore up my pack while I hid in a tree.

Cubs were cute as they shreded 1k in gear and sapped my fly rod.

Usually let them pass.

The only time to be afraid is on certain islands when hunting.

Here's a video of a friend who was attacked. His hunting buddy saved him. Josh is a bit loopy from the drugs here.

When we lived in CA, we would see them all the time. Especially on Mondays (trash pickup day).

Walked out of my house multiple times to see a mom and Cubs playing in the tree in our front yard.

Was very interesting in that they seemed much more frightened than me and would immediately turn and run as soon as they saw us.

2 interesting encounters.

One, my wife was in her car backing out of the driveway and mom and cub were walking down the street. Cub sprinted to the car and put its paws on the window to look inside and see what was happening. Momma bear just watched.

Two, on the back patio one evening. Just me and my wife. Big female walked right past us and went to the garbage can. Knocked it over and dug through the trash for goodies while we were maybe 20-25 feet away watching. She’d look up periodically to make sure we were still sitting snd not moving toward her.

Once she got what she wanted she left and again walked right by us, almost gave us a little nod as she walked by.

We went to pick up the mess after she left and found she had sorted out and eaten all the k cups.

So, have you ever used bear spray in a real situation? You didn’t answer.
