Have you had any transmission problems, if so what type?

I never drive it, but my wife hasn't mentioned anything. Not that she'd recognize transmission issues anyway.

We have a limited Highlander 2017. Doubt there is much difference between ours and a 2018. No issues at all. I drive it a good bit.

What happened?

Nothing happened. I was thinking of buying a 2018 Highlander but had found that Toyota was having some issues with their 8 speed transmissions. The Highlander and Sienna have the same transmissions. Just Google Toyota 8 speed trany problems.

We just bought a new Highlander. Only 800 miles, obviously no issues yet. Honestly didn't know they were having issues

I have a 2008 Sequoia with 360K miles and it has had very few issues and runs like a top. I hope to go well past 400K miles.

Dodge is the one to stay away from unless you have an ironclad transmission warranty. I have a 2015 Toyota, and it is a gem.

If Toyota is having transmission problems I’ll run naked in front of a police station

I’d say the news you are reading is from “user error”

Consumer Reports

quote:

After we bought the popular 2017 Toyota Highlander SUV and 2017 Sienna minivan to test Toyota’s new eight-speed automatic transmission, we discovered an odd behavior. The transmission made the engine rev before upshifting, especially from second to third gear, even under light acceleration. This delayed shifting increased engine noise and made driving rather unpleasant. As our staff members drove the vehicles they routinely asked, “What’s wrong with this transmission?” So we shared our experiences with Toyota in December. The company re-evaluated the transmission and agreed with our finding. It then created a software update and issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) in early March so that owners could get their vehicles adjusted.

We recommend that shoppers look for the production date before choosing a Highlander or Sienna. (The manufacture date is on the label in the driver's doorjamb.) If you buy a model built before the change was made (or you already own one), check with your dealer to ensure the software is up to date for Highlander V6 models; this does not apply to four-cylinder and hybrid versions.
News about the fix isn’t being communicated to customers. But owners who reach out to their dealers can have the software update at no charge; it takes about 45 minutes. (The modification is identified as TSB-0194-17 for the Highlander and TSB-0197-17 for the Sienna.)

Oh well Mr Perfect one mistake is not so bad. A number of their 8 speed transmissions have failed with less than 20,000 miles. Just Google Toyota 8 speed transmission problems.

After 3 months of putting up with this ridiculous 8 speed transmission in my 2018 Highlander, it started to develop harsh up/down-shifts between 1-2 and the identity crisis between gears as described. I traded it in on the weekend for another manufacturer/model because I just couldn't deal with it any longer. Toyota dealership is aware of the problem but has no fix for it. Drove me crazy how terrible it drove for such a new vehicle. Toyota got this one very wrong and I hope they come out with a fix for everyone else that hates it as much as I did. I lost total confidence in the longevity by the way it's acting and I wanted to post it for everyone to steer them away from this model and others that have this Direct Shift UA80 series 8 speed transmission like the Camry/Sienna until they have fixed it. SHAME ON YOU TOYOTA for charging such a premium for such a terrible product!

That one time that my wife cut off my dick and sold it, I purchased a Highlander.
