My shoulder hurts like hell. My golf buddy says it's probably bursitis. Is this like a general practitioner kind of thing or what?

Are bursitis and torn rotator cuff easily confused without imaging, or do they feel different from each other?

Thank you

The bursa is actually outside of the joint capsule. But rest, anti-inflammatories, and—if warranted—a corticosteroid injection into the bursa is recommended for relief.

This is an orthopedic condition but most primary care doctors should be able to administer the shot.

Thank you! When I had to take my kid to the ortho the waiting list for an appointment was ridiculous. Much easier to get in to see my primary.

The rotator cuff tendons and subacromial/subdeltoid bursa are closely related structures and routine RC tendinitis may present similar to bursitis. Full blown RC tears or partial thickness tears are often associated with deficits in range of motion and weakness.

An MRI can easily detect full or partial thickness tears of the RC, but a good orthopod can usually make the distinction clinically

Had that crap in my heel. Toughed it out for most of a summer thinking it was a bad stone bruise that wouldn’t go away. I switched running shoes, took time off, nothing worked. Finally went to the Ortho and got cortisone injections. I followed his advice and have had no issues since.

Johnny Knoxville had it in one of the Jackass movies. It caused him to blow an air horn during dudes back swings. Hope i don't have bursitis anytime soon.

Yep, I’ve had it a few times. Cant lift arms over head, sleeping sucks. Go get the shot. Just make sure you guide the doc to where it is or else it’s pointless.

No clue what bursitis is, but I had a torn labrum 100% around, and it hurt like a bitch. Still have problems with it today after surgery. Shoulders are nothing to frick around with, get it fixed well. I think I’ll regret mine not getting better treatment when I’m older

I've been in the hospital the last 2 days because i "ruptured" the Bursa sac on my elbow. Apparently, I have a bone spur on my elbow. When I hit my elbow on the wall, the spur perfectly hit the Bursa causing it to tear and "leak". I use quotes because it's not exactly how it works but it's the easiest way to explain it. With some kind of awesome luck I had some bacteria in my skin which just so happened to enter and infect the Bursa.

The result is a shite ton of swelling and pain. The only silver lining is they're giving me IV morphine every 3 hours. Hopefully I'm not a junkie when I come out the other side.

I wouldn't trust just a buddy's opinion. If you're in pain, go to someone that specializes in sports medicine. Many orthopedic doctors do. There is a difference within the specialties because for some that's their focus.

If it is just bursitis, it's an inflammation of the bursa sac. Rest. Ice. Ibuprofen might help. A cortisone shot is designed to reduce the inflammation and help it heal. Sometimes that, and some physical therapy (i.e. like stretching, strengthening the muscles in the area) can help.

Most likely you'll have to live with this the rest of your life. I have it in the hip and it sucks. I'm not giving up with I like doing, so I just deal with it.
