Very painful.
Believe it or not...running backwards (sprints) worked!
I guess it developed a different antagonist muscle group.
Only thing that worked in three years of trying Everything.
Good luck.

Try different shoes. I changed to a good pair of runners and it changed my life. I used to get shin splints all the time and now they are gone from simply changing shoes.

Yes. This is why I switched over to riding my bike and using the elliptical.
Its hard to get that good running form. For me at least.
I also prefer running on the softer surfaces. Seems to help a little.

I played basketball with bad shoes and it damn near killed my legs. I couldn't run down the court without horrible pain. I had to take a break and change shoes and then I was fine.

Ran track in high school and college and got a bad case of shin splints one year running on a hard track with spikes. My coach had me do two things. First, I tied a 10 lbs weight in a loop around my foot and lifted the weight up and down to work the muscle on top of the shin. Secondly, I covered the shin in Icy Hot and wrapped tight with an ace bandage to get relief.
The muscle on the shin is separating from the bone due to the impact. Softer surfaces and good shoes should help.

Try dry needling and strengthen your calves
