No, its possible. Still has to go through the legislature and still has to be approved by the voters of EBR parish as a whole, as well as statewide. Nothing changes in that regard when a city is created.
Ok, see, that's what I didn't understand. I was under the assumption that incorporated areas could have their own school districts like they do in every suburb of Atlanta and Cleveland. I apologize for the incorrect statement.

Lol, you said, completely seriously, that people from different backgrounds cannot possibly get along in a classroom. You're half a step away from saying there should be no race mixing whatsoever. At least admit it, and stop getting all pissy when someone points it out.

I grew up in Central and graduated from there in 06. My question is why do I not remember there being such a backlash from BR about us wanting to incorporate?
Central has always been considered an unofficial town of sorts and its a community that has been fairly separate from the rest of the parish, due to natural boundaries and vacant land. When you asked somebody out there where they were from, they said "Central".
I've live in the Baton Rouge area all my life and have never heard anyone say they were from St. George. The area is not its own community.
Also, most people were sympathetic to the plight of Central. EBR was busing students in from Capitol, Glen Oaks, and Scotlandville and these kids were terrible. Getting a new school district fixed this problem. This isn't really the problem with south baton rouge. The crappy students in St. George actually live there.
quote:
Now Central is in the top 5 I believe in districts in the state.
Right. I already explained that they stopped busing students in from North Baton Rouge. Those are some crappy students. Central was a very good high school in the 80's and early 90's when they were 80%+ white. Central isn't doing anything differently as far as curriculum and teachers unions. They just have better parents and better students.
quote:
Why would people in St. George not want this?
Everyone wants this. It takes more than platitudes to make it happen. Short of selective enrollment, your demographics need to change. I already explained how this was the case with Central.
quote:
During my 4 yrs at Central high I would say our demographics was 60/40 due to the m&m's ( minority to majority transfers) meaning that if you life's in EBR parish and were a minority the school system would bus you to a majority white school if your parents chose.
Now Central is closer to 90/10...
ding ding ding!

Thats okay. St. George organizers want people to think that forming a city wasn't their primary goal all along. They want you to think you are doing it for the children. The same people are about to push to incorporate the city of Watson. Their schools are just fine.

It's 80/20 according to the latest numbers, but even that is surprising. I would have thought more to the 60/40 range.

Is that Frontline reporter the Clayton Bigsby reporter?

Just watched. Reminded me of programs I've seen in the past describing the KKK or other racist organizations. Definitely designed to cast everyone who supports St. George in a negative light.

Disagree. I just finished the special and feel completely different. Everyone is going to apply their own opinions to the material and interpret it how they want to interpret it.

Political actions almost always have an ulterior motive. The fact that you are so appalled that the St Geogian push has some ulterior motive is mildly humouros.

They have 2 guys from Central(speaks for itself) leading their secession effort, I haven't seen a prominent person living in the insurgent area speak up in favor of this.
I RAed this. Do not cross that line Lloyd Christmas. No matter which side of the discussion/arguement you are on, we are all Americans, Louisianaians,EBRians and for the moment Baton Rougeans. There is no reason for flaming at all.
Thank you

They missed one thing in the Frontline piece. It was really Judge Parker's fault. It was a crusty ole guy from what I hear. EBR was dragging it's feet and making me a guinnea pig etc, but he ordered it all done overnight. EBR let you could choose any school to attend but not enough people were doing it.
The DOJ and others who sued for this opposed his plan. Why you ask, because they said it would cause massive white flight and destroy the school system. (Read the damn book I posted its free.)The next day Parkview, was born, Catholic had a waiting list, etc.

I was at Baker High in 1983 when they closed Scotlandville and sent half the kids to Baker and the other half to Belaire and Tara(were supposed to go to Central but they maneuvered out of it). That started the massive flight from the public system to Ascension/Livingston and Private systems. You can blame Parker, but he couldn't get the school board to voluntarily desegregate, so he forced the issue. He could have played nice for another 20 years and it was not going to get done.

White Flighters gonna white flight. A new city/school system/Olive Garden won't change this. period.

So if my agenda is different than your agenda, its bad. Its a discussion dude, you have your opinions, I have mine. Next time the thread just needs to say unicorporated opinions only, and I will stay out. Thanks for policing the thread.

Too bad your opinions are regulated to basically calling people racists , unfounded allegations.
