It is a good tradition if you have kids. This is the first year I haven't put this train under the tree - a 30's vintage Lionel Blue Comet. It is big and heavy (the trim is copper, for example) - much bigger than what people usually think when they think Lionel train. Kids love it. All I do is lubricate it and it runs as well as it did in the 30's. Lionel really made a quality product.

For size comparison, the tender behind the locomotive is about the size of a shoe box.

I wish they still made things today like they did back then.

Actually I've always wanted to get into model trains. But I couldn't afford it as a kid and I've never gotten around to it as an adult. To do it seriously is very expensive as well as very time consuming. I've been to a few model railroad displays, that's about it.

My parents used to do that.

Until the year i stomped on the train track from running full speed down the stairs as a five year old and put a big hole in my foot from one of the little train crossing bars

Standard gauge - much bigger than 027. They reproduce it now, but Lionel stopped making it originally in the early 30's.

Here's the size comparison - the brown caboose is 027, the yellow crane is standard gauge:

There was a place in BR that was used to go to on field trips that had a huge model train set. I thought it was the coolest thing when I was little

We did when I was kid. I don't know what my parents did with the trains we had. They were old, for sure.

Think I will start this next Christmas.

My great aunt and uncle had one when I was a kid. My cousin got it when they died. Still pissed about that.
