Those are good looking models. I've never gotten a nice roster shot of a KCS ES44AC but did catch a newly painted SD70 ACe:

Good links - thanks.

I was lucky and got to meet Ward Kimball a few times. He was a really nice guy with a fantastic vintage train collection.

One is the "Lady Belle" livery, which is the picture above, and the other is "nude" livery, which is all gray with "KCS" under the cab window.

I have about 20 or so SD70, Dash 8/9, GP-60, and SD40/45... But all in the SP "blood nose" livery. All are Lionel and Atlas O with TMCC/Legacy.

No way I'd put that model under a tree to be destroyed.

That belongs in a case, on a shelf, or in a very prized model train display.

When I retire I'm going to build model trains. Is that weird?

What does it take to power that larger track?

I had a model train growing up that was on about 13 feet of track.

We did for the past several years, until our Boston Terrier decided last year that she didn't want that train under the tree any longer.

It does not take as much power as you would think, though I use a Lionel Z transformer to power them. The image is off the net, and is not a photo of one of mine.

I keep them packed away in their original boxes but I have a few on display shelves in my office, which is located where there used to be an old jewelry store.

You can run the old trains as long as you do it sparingly. The Blue Comet is Lionel's second best - the cars have interior details, with sinks and a toilet. It was an expensive set in the 30's which was good because quite a few nice sets have survived.

The brown train in the middle picture at the bottom is 30's American Flyer, not Lionel. It belonged to the family of U.S. District Judge William Steger.

I ruined the Santa Claus handcar, by accident, by putting it in the display window at the office one Christmas. The sun worked the paint. It still looks ok, but it was in superb condition before I did that.

I've always wanted a train set under the tree but never had it. That one is beautiful.
