I mean it could be reincarnation or an afterlife. But it doesn't matter. All that is, is an excuse to not live better now and not worry about future generations.
But seeing as we don't encounter anything paranormal with dying, I'll gonna go with we just become wormfood.

Hell, you live in Louisiana. Temperature difference will hardly be noticeable.
That said, that's where all the wild women will be.
Seriously though, I live in the present and when the time comes we'll see what we'll see. I am not keen on wasting a lifetime worrying about a future life that may or may not be there.
Always loved the quote in a song there everybody wants to go to hravrn , but no one wants to die.

I mean obviously nobody knows for certain, but seeing that we haven't the slightest idea how consciousness could possibly emerge from brain/matter, I'd speculate that there's probably a good chance that it continues after death in some form. I'd also hedge my bet on God being there, in some way or another. Just my two cents!

Believe is a really strong word in this case.
Possible? Sure
Likely? Nope
Ever seen any sign of anything? Nope
I've lost people I loved and had them "visit" in dreams but IMO that's my brain doing shite to myself.
I am the type of person who has to see it to believe it. But I also admit I know nothing.
So it's possible but I don't live my current life based on that maybe being the case.

I'm starting to lean more towards reincarnation lately.

It's a cute quote but it begs the question,
Are you such a shitty person that only reason you led a good life is fear of God? Or could you be a good person without it?
Who do think an omniscient being actually gives paradise?
Also remember at least one self proclaimed Christian on here has declared that only morality derived from God keeps him from murdering people.
Consider that an afterlife also holes the abortion debate.
ETA: 3 downvotes so far and no rebuttal. Hmmmmm.

I have faith that there is.

I think people are mainly good or mainly bad. They may use religion to mask it, but they are who they are.
quote:guess that depends on your definition of paradise. I hope it is, within our ability to understand, similar to this life. Main difference is the lack of sorrow that comes with the great experience of life.
Who do think an omniscient being actually gives paradise?
quote:does it? If you see the debate as the generation of a soul at the beginning of life, then those souls would presumably go to a favorable afterlife.
Consider that an afterlife also holes the abortion debate.
Now the women that perpetuate such actions and the people that facilitate such actions....that could be a different story.

Absolutely not. Most people are genuinely good no matter what their stance on religion is. I truly believe that. It's part of human nature to want to help others. Not saying everyone is like this, but the majority of people are. Now back to the afterlife debate. Religion aside, certain aspects of science DOES point to some kind of continuance of consciousness, soul, etc after death. Some people choose to couple religion, God, with that.

I actually agree that most people are good. Otherwise there would not be so many of us.
I do disagree that science has shown us a continuance of consciousness as it's pretty easy to show and verify its tied to the physiological functioning of the brain. Which is the tragedy of things like Alzheimer's, dementia, and brain injuries as this all either remove of change the essence of a person.

Maybe we get glimpses of the multiverse and consider them the afterlife. Or maybe the religions are correct.
I don’t scoff at the idea of God. What I scoff at is the feeble attempts to put an almighty being into a tightly controlled box that you have to be a member of the club to talk to.

You see what I'm getting at with the last part though.
If afterlife or reincarnation is involved it cycles the soul off to a "better" outcome.
And if that's the case, then it absolves the mother and/or father (depending on who is really pushing the decision) instantly as it means they have both not brought the child into an unwanted situation and sped it to a presumably better start.

Wouldn't say more real, but I do believe in something after death. We are made up of star dust billions of years old with energy that can be neither created nor destroyed. The collective mass of that energy being God. Honestly, I think Star Wars probably has the most accurate description of my higher power

I'll have to respectfully disagree. It is known that consciousness and the brain RELY and WORK together, but there is absolutely no evidence supporting the notion that the brain produces consciousness. It's the ultimate enigma.
Here's a quote by Edward Witten, largely responsible for popularity of the String Theory, who is compared to Einstein and Newton.
"I think consciousness will remain a mystery. Yes, that's what I tend to believe. I tend to think that the workings of the conscious brain will be elucidated to a large extent. Biologists and perhaps physicists will understand much better how the brain works. But why something that we call consciousness goes with those workings, I think that will remain mysterious. I have a much easier time imagining how we understand the Big Bang than I have imagining how we can understand consciousness... "

I understand your argument regarding Alzheimer's, etc.. but the flip side to that is that if the brain acts as a conduit for consciousness, then of course you're going to have issues if it's "damaged," same as you world if a TV is damaged, radio, etc...
Point is, both of these arguments have some validity towards them because NOBODY knows which is correct. I guess that's why it's called "faith."
IMO, I think it's going to take another revolution in science to finally start scratching the surface of this issue. Something beyond materialism. Maybe consciousness exists as a field that we cannot yet detect with current technology? Who knows!

People have the right to believe what they want an at times I wish I had stronger faith, but this is how I look at the afterlife, religion, etc,
If there is a higher power, I have a really hard time people will be judged based on how they practiced their religion. The idea of having to be "saved" in order to avoid suffering for eternity just makes no sense at all to me.
We live in too complex of a world for it to be that simple.
Every single one of us are flawed and being flawed is extremely broad. If someone who isn't in their right mind commits a mortal sin, will they be punished for reacting to something that was beyond their control?
In reality, no one really knows what happens after we die. People might have strong faith into what they believe will happen, but no one has no idea. There is no proof.
If someone likes to gamble, hit up strip clubs every once in awhile, drinks on a regular basis and isn't a religious man, but would never hurt a fly. In fact, they are someone who will help people any chance they get, etc.. They will be punished for eternity while the good things they have done gets overlooked?
What if someone does some good things every once in awhile and attends church regularly, but they are only doing it so they don't go to hell? Is that a more selfish act because they are only doing these things because, in their mind, they want to avoid going to hell.
If everyone, in their right mind, wouldn't be assholes and just be considerate of other people, don't judge people based on their life style and offer help any time you can.. It doesn't matter what you believe, if there is an afterlife then you should be good. Because, again, life is too complex to look at it in black or white terms.

Seems selfish and not something you should be rewarded with eternal life for while someone like Ghandi will burn in hell for eternity. Do you truly believe if you need to be enticed with eternal life to believe? A true test of belief is if you still believed and practiced as if you believed knowing there is nothing in it for you, no afterlife.
Is God that easily fooled?

Well, I can't tell others what they should believe. My personal faith it exactly that- and it's non-transferrable. As for organized religion, I am not a regular participant, although I was raised Roman Catholic. I don't believe that disqualifies me. I happen to believe man is imperfect. We all have flaws. That would include the current Pope.
I'll stop now.
