I constantly consider coming off for this very reason, but it's kind of a silly reason when you think about it. If it makes your life and mind more comfortable and better, why not utilize it. It is a tool we humans have developed for just that.

I am an anxious person to the point that it limits my career and enjoyment of certain activities that I assume most people take for granted.
I have and will continue to avoid SSRIs because this is how I was made, and I think I’m supposed to fight through it.
But I do understand why people would choose differently and in fact probably think my position is stupid.
A question for you, though. How do you know it makes your life better? By comparing before and after, I’m sure, but I guess I can’t convince myself that being less anxious would be “better”, from a holistic long-term “how should I live” perspective. No judgment here, just conversing.

Ok, you win.

I'm old.

I'm sad.

My life experience is null.

That's all good.

But, I'm good with it....and I'm pretty solvent.

Would feel the same way about diabetes or heart failure?

No one has to take any meds, but if anxiety really affects your life severely, a trial of medication is an option. You can always stop.

I would equate it with pre-diabetes or indications of heart problems, and yes, I absolutely would make every change possible to avoid being on a mind altering drug in perpetuity.

I'm willing to change my opinion as I'm certainly no expert, but the only arguement I've seen in this thread is "you just don't understand mental illness" which is less than convincing.

This clinically narcissistic bitch not believing in the science behind mental illness is perhaps one of the most ironic elements of this board.

No, but I think mental illnesses are, for the most part, substantively different, especially if it’s not totally debilitating and you have the ability to make changes in your life that would either help you overcome it or avoid situations that cause it.

You have to think that SSRIs have enabled a lot of behavior that is not conducive to overall well-being.

I am not exactly in the same boat as you, but similar. I can get on and off of Xanax cold turkey and have found that it is now pretty much non effective.
With Effexor however it’s pretty much impossible. Even with a ween off and dr help it seems to be impossible. Due to circumstances during the holidays I went 5 days without and it was pretty much the worst experience. It gave me vertigo and thoughts that scared the frick out of me.

I wish I could be rid of the Effexor.
