I've been on Prozac since ~1995. I was also on Xanax for most of that time. I have, in the past year, weaned myself successfully from the Xanax. The Prozac, however, has me a bit concerned to try to do the same with it. I'm afraid that after the amount of time that I've been on it, my brain chemistry would be substantially changed to the point of no return.

Before you say it, yes I plan to talk to my doctor about it, but I am still over a month away from my appointment and have been thinking about it.

only advice I have is do it as slow as the Xanax wean or slower. Coming off Paxil was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced. For a year after, I still had an electric shock sensation that would occur occasionally.

Why do you want to stop the SSRI?

I guess to feel like I'm not dependent on psych meds anymore. Like I said, though, I have concerns with the effects.

Prozac and Xanax for 20+ years? Jesus Christ. I'd love to drop people like you off in sub-Saharan Africa or Pakistan or some other shithole for six months. When you've got no healthcare, no food or clean water, civil wars, and your lifespan is 40, you've got a reason for the anxiety.

Somewhere, your grandfather is calling you a pussy.

Like you said, talk to your doctor. Getting off SSRIs, especially after chronic use can be Very Difficult. But are you in a rush or something? If you've been on them for 20 years, even if it takes another whole year of gradually decreasing your dosage, so what?

The fastest way to fail getting off these drugs is to try an get off them as fast as you can. Just talk to your Doc, and if you really want to get off, just be patient.

That’s a fair reason. If you’re stable, I’d recommend caution with stopping. Depression can be just as chronic as hypertension or diabetes.

It’s good that you’re going to discuss it with your doctor. A slow taper along with mental health hygiene (good diet, exercise and sleep) should work. Of course you’ll wanna be vigilant for any returning symptoms.

Dude, you portray yourself as that in every thread that you participate in. Get off of your high horse, and if you don't have anything to contribute, out of this thread as well.

The majority on this forum are pussies. Bunch of drunks, pot heads, and prescription druggies!!!

They would have not survived teen years in the 70's-80's.

Embarrassing to themselves, yet too stupid to see that.

Good thing you’re not a doctor. Also, I suspect his grandfather would be proud of him taking the steps to safeguard his health despite what internet know-it-all’s say.

Same here. I had it prescribed during a long hospital stay because long hospital stays are depressing and just didn't bother refilling it when I got out. Bad mistake. Definitely should have weened off that one.

I'm far from perfect, but I haven't needed a cocktail of pills for the last two and a half decades to function.

I completely understand that, thus, my success in ditching the Xanax.

Yep. At some point you have to pop the tittie out of your mouth and face the real world without opiods and mood altering drugs. You live in the USA. How fricking hard can your life be over the last two decades?
