I'm certainly considering it

I have a friend who her and her husband(no kids) just said F it. Quit their jobs, sold their house, all the belongings, bought an RV and are just traveling the US for a year or so living at camp grounds. At first I was like what are you doing! Then I thought about it and got jealous!

My lil cousin and his wife sold everything they had and went to St John USVI about 7 years ago and are still there. Goining visit them again in July. Would do it in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the little ones.

I have a lot and I mean a lot of friends on St. John. The problem is that the hobby in the islands is drinking. Tons of alcoholics down there.
We toyed with the idea of a place on an island but we feel that we would be tied to it and it would limit our traveling too much. Then there's that drinking problem that seems to develop when you're there all the time.
Now we're thinking about a place in Italy where we can explore the country and hop on a train and explore Europe.

Does anyone know about the fishing in the islands?
Posted on 6/8/17 at 9:15 pm to GreatLakesTiger24
For women or fish? Neither sucks.

fish... i know a lot of people say "you'll get sick of it", but it was my favorite kind of weather and all of my hobbies can be done there.

You're young. Give it a shot. I go down there a lot and love it.

Outside of the tourist areas, people are dirt arse poor living in half completed houses with no floors.
You are correct. My sis had a good job and made good money down there.
But the locals got rowdy and started raping white women as well as robbing/assaulting/killing non natives. Couple that with the inconveniences of island living- lack of modern conveniences we take for granted here- and the decision to move back stateside was easy.

Aruba looks nothing like your pic.

Guy who owned a restaurant that I liked in Ridgeland, MS just suddenly packed his shite up and shut the place down one day...a week or so later I saw written on the window, the words "See ya in Belize!" I was wondering a while back how things worked out for him.

Tomorrow is the 11th day of my 15 days on Kauai. My wife and I have been 4 times previously but this is the first with trip with our 4 kids. My wife and I plan to retire here but we will both be about 60 when we do. I meet people every day here who did exactly that but one thing I find common in their stories is that they didn't have more than one kid if any at all. In fact, most were single with no kids when they made the decision to move here. My waiter tonight is 36 and has no kids but has a GF he met when he moved here 3 years ago. She is a zip line guide. They earn enough together to make it work. Even though my wife and I will have to wait another 13 or so years to be where we dream to be I have discussed with my kids that it would be very cool if they choose that path after college if they choose. The pace is so laid back here and everyone seems happy with their place. Even the surf bums doing odd jobs for money and living in tent compounds at He'ana Beach Park are all smiles all the time. The beauty and laid back nature of this island is infectious regardless of your station. The dude who owns only a tent, a bike, some clothes, and a surfboard are probably as happy about their situation as anyone as long as they can earn enough to feed themselves.

Don't listen to people. That's why they're stuck in some cubicle for 40 years trying to outlive their retirement date.

i think about it often.
but ive already given up on the rat race. luckily, ive made enough money at a young age that i can afford my minimalist lifestyle with barely much work. i wake up when i want to and go to bed when i choose, as well.
also, ill never get married or have children because that sounds like an absolute deathtrap; so the freedom to pick and go will always be there
for now, ive decided to stay because there are some things holding me back, but i think ill be gone within 3 years.

I worked with a guy who moved from VT to St Croix. Said that the whole first year he thought everyone who didn't do likewise was insane, ran on the beach every day, swam in crystal waters, got drunk, explored the local talent, etc.
Then, he said, it got old very quickly. He realized that people don't really date down there, they just "take turns," the local economy is a little sad, and the whole novelty of it just wares off after a while.
After a couple years like that, he moved back to the states. It should also be noted he was a huge douche, FWIW.

Pankins is pretty close. Unless you are moving to the caymans (read as super expensive, and need a work visa) most of the islands have limited resources for people who need a good bit of social interactions. You probably won't gel well with the natives, and the rest of the people who decide to pick it up and move there are usually burn out types in their mid 20's. You have to hustle a lot to make any $$$, cause the jobs don't pay much or anyone would move down. The circle of people that live year round is small and you will run into the same groups of people repeadetly. I'd recommend renting for 6 months and get out. Will be a great 6 months. now maine, Vermont, Montana, Idaho, could be forever.
