I think every college aged kid should spend a mandatory night in jail as an aversion to DUI/other shenanigans that might result in a night in the slammer.
I haven’t been, but have buddies who have and they all say the experience will make you think twice about the next time.

I did a 3 month stretch in the Montgomery County, Texas jail for DWI before i got sober. It was bad but I survived to post again.

In Texas, some offenders are doing actual sentences in county. So not everyone is a pre trial detainee which makes it a little more hellish. The Aryan Brotherhood and the Aryan Circle are prominent in this particular county. 99.9 percent of the people in there were in there for something related to drugs or alcohol. I saw the daylight once in 90 days. The food is all soy based. I had noone to put money on my books for commissary so I basically was starving. Its definitely a barter system and the major forms of currency were ramen noodles aka soups and coffee. People left me alone for the most part but you definitely needed to establish that you were not to be fricked with before you could relax a bit. Its basically like being at the worlds most boring summer camp in hell. I ready everything I could get my hands on. I was in a pod with 30 or 40 other guys in bunks. One tiny tv and a hot pot. I am trying to recall any other interesting tidbits.
eta
the gangs were largely business related. everyone dealt with eachother. it was about money in county not race. towards the end I had a bottom bunk and the top was empty. A new guy gets brought into the pod at 2 or 3 am. So I had to wake up so the dude could put his mattress and shite up there. He had swastika tattoos on his earlobes. I have a very obviously Jewish name but they didnt give a shite. Two ways to get fricked up are to mess with someone else's property or not keep your self and your house clean. Aside from that its not hard to stay out of trouble. There were razor blades hidden all over the pod. they took them out of the razors and used them to cut food, make things and give fade haircuts etc. there is no way a guard could get into that pod to stop anything in remotely enough time to prevent death or serious injury.

I had an employee get sentenced to jail for doing 110MPH on the Atchafalaya, the judge was from Lafayette and by coincidence I knew him from sharing a duck blind once. He was to report on Friday at 6 and get released Sunday at 6. I called the judge to see if they would cut him some slack, the judge told me that he was trying to save the kids life, his driving record was abysmal, not a bad reason.
The guy said the worst part was that all they got to eat was PB&J with Koolaid.

Holding area as a senior in high school for a stupid afternoon. Not in a cell. Still hated it

Did 40 hours in a weekender cell at a prison for dui. Probably 30 people in a huge room with lots of beds. Most were checking in every Friday and leaving Sunday afternoon doing extended weekend sentences. They were selling drugs to long termers through a hole in the ceiling, smoking pot openly. Dealer told me he made more money on weekends than his regular job and offered all kinds of drugs.

Why do prisons allow prisoners to inter mingle. Seems as if every inmate was in their own cell or follows a chain linked fence line to get food, no one could fight at all that other shite you see in TV. It’s prison, too bad you can’t play bball with some other dudes. Have some fence runs like dogs where inmates can go outside to get some air. They can talk through the fences.

Well, I didn't do any serious time, but my couple of hours in a holding cell was quite eye opening. I was actually dressed in a nice polo shirt and slacks and when I got put in the holding cell, all the guys asked if I got arrested on the golf course. I wished I had, but no I was in there over some stupid shite.
As most of you know, you get a phone call and these guys were almost fighting to be the next one to call. I just sat there because I was not going to fight over a stupid phone call. The officers could tell this was new to me so they pulled me out and let me use one of their phones. They were really cool and one asked, you've never been in here before have you? I guess it was apparent.
The most exciting part was when a young man came into the holding cell and sat next to me cussing up a storm. After he calmed down, I asked him why was he so pissed off. He said the judge gave him a $750,000 bond because they accused him of murdering someone. Needless to say, I was a little surprised at his response and was immediately ready to get out ASAP. About 5 minutes later, I got released, but that's an experience I will never forget. I was in there for about two hours, but it was one of the most eye-opening experiences I've ever had!
