Anybody here been in real jail?

Not talking about an overnighter, I mean booked and served real time?
Experiences?
I have two relatives that did stints. Both said all the movies and TV are bs. If you stick to yourself, don’t get mixed in with drama, it’s just serving time. The concept of humans locked up like dogs animals in a shelter is fascinating to me. Been reading some books but wanting the real stories.
Also trash TV like Love after Lockup makes it look overly glorified.

I haven't but I know a few guys very well that did hard time. They do describe it similarly to what's depicted in movies and TV. You have to get to know the big dogs to make sure you're taken care of and can get into good barter situations. I've never really heard them say it's survival of the fittest, though, as far as just getting raped or beaten up. The jail treats them like crap from a health and safety standpoint, regardless of who they are and what they've done. One of the guys literally had multiple infections go untreated and came out of jail needing serious medical attention (surgery, dialysis, etc).

One of my best friends went to Angola but started out in Terrebonne Parish Jail.
He said it's about 80% black and 15% white and 5% other. The bad part is the 90% of the white want to be black. He said he kept to himself and would punch whoever tried to mess with straight in the nose no questions asked and most people didn't mess with him. He's a shrimper from Montegut, so he was pretty tough to begin with.
