Anybody have any experience with saving consistently with a safety razor?

I've recently gone back to wet shaving with pre-shave oil, and soap and brush, but still using the disposable Gillette fusion as it gives me the closest shave and little to no irritation, but the blades are just so damn absurdly expensive.
I recently purchased a Muhle safety razor and some Gillette blades, but it still gives me some razor burn, and I'm sure it's my technique, but I'd really like to save some serious cash by using the much less expensive blades. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

It's much harder with a wife.

I've got a 1940s Gillette DE razor.
Get a sample blade pack from Amazon. Try to find the best blade for you. Order a large pack of that blade. I haven't had to buy blades in over a year. I use Shark blades.
A good shave brush, good shave soap, and a nik stick are your friend.

Get yourself some derby blades on Amazon. 100 for 7 bucks.
All I've used for 10 years. Shave twice. A rough pass to take off most of it, and a clean pass after.
Use the weight of the razor. Do not push.
I can take a full beard off in under 2 minutes. I can take a full bush off in under 5

Man, that's cheap, and thus why I want to dump these disposables.

Yeah, I think I may be inadvertently pushing down and causing the irritation. I'm going to work on it, and thanks for the heads up on the Derby blades. I'll give them a shot.

I use Shark blades, but you can buy a sample pack from Amazon or some razor sites. Surprising, there's quite a bit of difference in blades, so it's worth getting the sampler.

How often are you changing blades with the fusion?
I have a medium heavy beard and shave probably 5 days out of 7. I get 2 months per blade by drying it with a towel and then spritzing the blades with isopropyl alcohol.
Even for the expensive ones it isn't bad when you are only buying a pack and a half of blades per year.
Now I can't help if you want to be a shave nerd. I look at it as a necessary evil and not something to romanticize.

I have a beard but still have to shave my neck and above my cheeks.

I use Feather blades and use 2 passes. It's not supposed to get as close as a Fusion because there's no pulling, but it's a more natural shave IMO.

Don't buy 100 of them before you try them out. Buy a sample pack and you'll get 8-10 different 5 packs. Try them out and see which ones you like best.
Derbys are very mild, which could mean less irritation, but a lot of that depends on your skin sensitivity and thickness of facial hair.
Buying a sample pack will allow you to see which type of blades are the most comfortable for you.
And yes, technique is obviously very important as well. Check out Nick Shaves youtube channel. He has a whole tutorial series on DE shaving that is very in depth on things like how to properly load a brush to the shave itself.

I have one of those Rick Harrison safety razors I bought a couple of years ago. It came with a dozen blades. I've changed the blades out maybe three times in two years. And it gives me a good shave.

I've never understood why the first shave they do feel dull. after that I can get 10 maybe even 15 shaves out of the blades before I swap to a new one.
