I think the commercial you are talking about is for the vaccine. Not sure what the side effects for that are but if you can get it you should consider it b/c I'm not kidding when I say I've never felt more pain.
Just the air from the AC vent would hurt when it hit my skin. I had to take vicodin just to use the shower in the morning.

Anyway, go get the meds as soon as you notice symptoms and don't wait until you suddenly have a painful itching burning sensation like I did. If you do that you're not gonna have fun.

I had them around 10 years old. Chicken pox was around 5 or 6 I think.

I had them back in April. The pain wasn't as intense as the itching was for me, but I'm only 34. I had to keep a towel folded under the edge of my bra to keep it from rubbing against it, which probably looked stupid, but when it's hurting, you won't give a rats arse how it looks. 
I still have a little scarring that hasn't completely faded away, but no nerve damage. I started taking black elderberry extract immediately, shingles are caused by the herpes zoster virus and the extract is an anti-viral that's particularly effective against strains of herpes. Avoid all foods that are high in arginine and add foods that are lysine rich, especially avoid peanuts and peanut butter. Herpes zoster takes a foothold when your ratio of arginine to lysine gets out of whack. I took a lysine supplement 3x a day as well as a vitamin c 2x a day. And lastly, see a chiropractor. Have your spine aligned. The virus lies dormant in the spinal column and adjusting your spine can help force it back to its dormant state sooner. Good luck!!

You can still catch shingles from the vaccine, and they hurt worse than the ones from the chicken pox strain. Good luck.

Had them when I was 22. Pretty awful. Pain pills only helped so much. When I was sleeping it felt like spiders were crawling inside my skin

Didn't have chicken pox as a kid but got shingles a year or two ago. Read online it was miserable but I didn't find it to be so bad. Just itchy and kinda gross

I was pretty lucky and had very little discomfort. Went to the MD and got on steroids and antivirals as soon as I saw the rash and got lucky.

the shooting pain in nerves is SPECTACULAR.
After you are in deep, post about it and tell everyone you care about to get the shot. If you get the shot, you have very reduced symptoms.

Yes, at 38 and it was pretty miserable. Rx of Valtrex cured it but I got that "look" from the pharmacist I dreaded. Shingles, Dickhead, not Herp I told him...

Got it on my right foot last year when I was 39. In the span of 30 minutes, I went from perfectly fine, to absolute tears as I hobbled into the emergency room at Fort Lewis. The nerve pain was excruciating. Put me on crutches and pain meds for a week.
I went through three subsequent flair ups over the next several months. Put me back on crutches twice. I feel a tingle on my toes every now and then but luckily they haven't returned. Worst pain I've ever been through.

My wife had it in 2006. The scarring faded away around two years ago. Nasty shite.
