The wife got me a Phantom 3 Standard.

Haven't flown yet but did the FAA reg. And assembled/charged. Reading all the tutorials now. Pretty excited for the morning!

I didn't see mine on the list of drones required to be registered.

What's the penalty for not registering?

Bought a Sharper Image $56 one off the "impulse rack" at Kohl's a few days ago. It's pretty fun. I was always of the mind that the cheap ones are crap too but this one is cool. Takes video and pics if wanted. Even comes with a 4gb micro SD card. They have a $79 version that will stream to your phone also.

Edit: Mine said right on the box "No FAA Registration needed".

I got my 14yo that same sharper image drone for $29 at Walgreens.
Nothing special but great to start with and no big deal when he breaks it.

My neighbor bought his daughter one. She landed it in an oak tree in my back yard on its first flight. Took us an hour to get it down early this morning.

how the battery life on one of those? I've been wanting one to fly behind the house because I live on a bluff overlooking the river and have huge areas I could fly it in, above the treeline. But I would hate to be about a half mile down the river and it cut out and be lost on day 1.

I think I would probablybe disappointed with the amount of area I coukd cover, compared to the space I have, with one that was $1000 or less.

How loud are they? Could a woman, I mean a person hear one hovering outside her, I mean their bathroom window? What about in the Summer trying to hoover over other boats getting some bikini shots without being noticed?

Sincerely,
Titus "the creeper" Pullo

The larger Sharper Image ones last about 15-20 minutes. The little bitty one lasts 10-15. (Bought the bigger one for me and the smaller one for a secret santa gift).

Edit: small one has a 115' max distance. Larger one a 450' max distance.

Good

I could never imagine buying a phantom for a 9 year old for example.

When I was bored at work last week I was watching videos of drone crashes. So many crashes because an 8 year old was flying it.

I bought three batteries with ours so I can swap out. But they last about 24 minutes each.

Thanks.

That's what I was afraid of. I will hold off until range increases.

$29

I could see paying $50 or so for one to just frick off with. I might do that until they make one that has the range I want for $1000 or under.

Ordered the Mavic Pro thanks to a thread on Tech board. Won't ship until January 5th. The extra battery did come in so it was wrapped under the tree for the kids to open. At least they knew I wasn't BSing them about ordering it.
