I have a set of twins and went through something similar. Our doctor suggested a 3 mg dose of melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime and then read to them. We did this for 4-5 days and it worked great. We were able to quit giving them the melatonin and just read to them They stayed in their bed all night. Melatonin is natural, has no side effects and you will not need it very long.

Evolutionarily speaking its not been for very long that families have slept apart, in separate rooms. I wouldn't push your kids away or reject them when they are looking to you as security. Could cause major separation anxiety and other issues I would imagine although I am not a psychologist. I do have two young kids though.
Keep in mind that kids aren't raised in a day so you can slowly teach them to feel comfortable in their own room.

Night 1 of the new approach already paid dividends, a much better, easier night to deal with.
I gave him his toys back, let him have a little video game time. All evening, I kept telling him how brave he was and how well he'd do.
At bedtime, I told him I'd sleep with him for a bit to show him he doesn't have to be scared. I slept on the floor though to make it easier for me to get out once he fell asleep and to also still have him sleeping on his own without me literally right there next to him. He woke up once at 1am to come to my bedroom, I took him right back up and laid on the floor again. I probably left a little too soon as I got back to my bedroom, and 3 minutes later he came right back. Repeated the steps and all in all he kept me up for about 30 minutes and he went back to sleep around 1:30am for the rest of the evening.

ah, i remember the sleeping on the floor... i had to do the holding of hand while sleeping on floor. I'd fall asleep for 30 minutes and wake up and she's still staring at me.
