Do you really need school for this job on a plant?

30 years in a plant and had way over 5K hours of training over the years in OTJ and class room training. So yes, it helps to have school training.

Need it? No. It seems to be getting more and more difficult to even get an interview if you don't have one though.

It's something that can be frustrating as a PT, I'd rather hire someone with a little sense or some experience than some of these goofballs coming out of trade school.

By reading the OT, the only way in is to know someone or by a secret handshake. Then you'll work so much OT, that you'll forget you have a family and your wife will be fricking someone else within a year and your kids will hate you because you're never home.

I graduated May 14. I'm a year into my job and haven't worked OT in 4 months. My kids still know my name and I work 2 weeks a month and off 2 weeks a month.

I enjoy it.

The majority of people that post BS in these threads have no fricking clue what they're talking about and have never set foot in a plant. If they have, they had bad experiences because they couldn't handle nights or they were just a shitty employee and got run off.

Get your degree. It helps tremendously. I knew no one before I got on where I am now. I did have plant experience, but it wasn't operational. These past 2 weeks, I've gotten emails from ExxonMobil Baytown and Baton Rouge to go test, but I'm good where I'm at.

Be warned though, the competition is through the roof for these jobs. You're not going to get on somewhere immediately. It will get very frustrating, but you will eventually get on somewhere. Patience is very key to your sanity.

I got my PTech in 2010. I was actually hired two months before my graduation. Been at same plant for five years now. Just made board operator, only worked 200 hours OT this year and will make over 100k.

People hate on us but who cares.

So does the program give you a certification to drive a jacked up F250 with truck nuts?

I think most of the hate was brought upon by the attitudes of some of the operators that post here. Plenty of "look how much money I make with no college" posts will get peoples attention. There's nothing wrong with it...hell I get plenty of "hate" for my shitty posts too.

It's really a good job if it fits your lifestyle.

You willing to move? There are some that will hire you and send you to train on site and then bid into a pool to move into operations.

I know a buddy got hired on at Axiall here and they are sending him through their operators course and if the tests are passed then he can move into operations out of the labot pool. I think he's making like $20/hr until he can bid up. I know people say stay away from there, but getting into some operations experience without school has to count for something.

I'm just busting balls. I worked for a contractor in a plant for a few years. I hated it. You really couldn't pay me enough money to work in that environment again. Well maybe 300K per year would get me back in there but that would be the minimum.

Stemmed from one guy. I don't even remember who that was I'm that thread bragging about all the BS.

But all of these threads turn in some of the same automated responses like most threads do here now.

I'm fairly positive there's literally nothing on the OT that's been posted that's never been posted before if you've been here long enough.

Axiall's process sucks. I worked as a contractor at one of their plants and while I was almost done with school, I was going to apply. Then realized that I made more as a contractor than operations did. Add that to their less than stellar safety routines and rumored work environment that I was told about....no thanks.

Had a maintenance manager tell me "you sure you want to do that? " when I told him I was going to apply. That alone told me everything I needed to know about the job.

Got hired on in May, two weeks before graduating from Ptec school. Best thing I ever did. Degree isn't required, but I had zero plant experience and couldn't have sniffed this job without it. The process of trying to hired is extremely frustrating, but don't give up. Good luck.

It's all good. I probably have the best plant job there is. I've been in some places that made me feel the way you feel though.

What's the difference between a p-tech degree and just the certification? Is the certification actually recognized by the plants

It's crazy though.... My brother is in P Tech school right now without stepping foot in a refinery... I did 5 years behind bars in a plant doing everything from pipe fitting to instrument work to you name it and if we both applied for an operators position, he'd get the nod over me.... I hate you you douche I hope you read this too

Solid post, good info here...

I actually loved working with 'the guys' at the plant but you'll very rarely find a place where upper management and the work force gel, that's usually where you have your problems
