According to my dad who grew up in NOLA East, that was the place to be back in the 70's through 90's. First ever CFA outside of Georgia, ice skating, arcades, etc. I looked on Google Maps and it's nothing but a razed, empty lot with overgrown weeds now.

What happened?

White flight happened.. my family lived in NO East in the early 80s, i used to walk to the Plaza, it was awesome with the skating rink, Flamin Burger, Farrels ice cream, and the movie theater where i saw the original Ghostbusters on the big screen.

Also nearby was the Nature Center, where i’d take my dog on walks, and my friends and i would ride our bikes.. Kinda sorry my folks decided to leave, it was a fun neighborhood.

damn... the Plaza brings back too many childhood memories

it went downhill fast and then Katrina provided the final kill shot

that Grand movie theater they built next to it to try and save it did nothing

I didn’t think it was still open in 2005. That whole area turned into a shithole long before then.

it may have been closed by then and I just have my timeline messed up

I just know the building was demolished and the Lowe's was built shortly thereafter

the Nature Center,

Totally forgot that ever existed. I was a kid so my memory of going there is vague.

I didn’t know the Lowe’s closed. That place is a total wasteland.

Dude!!! I remember the Volcano that took two waiters to bring out on a stretcher and was preceded by a siren.

There was a time out there( The East) wherein you can get whatever you wanted. Plaza had 4 anchor stores and theatre. It had Rubenstein Bros, Godchaux's(high end clothing) I can remember Saturday morning/afternoons were packed. The area around it thrived as well, Sound Trek audio,Daiquiri's and smaller businesses thrived along Lake Forest Blvd from Read to Bundy. Even had pretty good restaurants out there, Ro Je's later Poldi's,Crozier's, Spinelli's and a steak restaurant in Deer Park, to name a few.

.....memories.... now only blight and crime.
