Barry Seal was reportedly operating out of the Opelousas airport up until 1982. I worked out there from 78 to 81.
There were strange crashes, weird comings and goings, and midnight rendezvous on the closed runway. There were planes fueled to less than capacity for weight reasons. There were some very interesting characters working out there, some of whom had flown in Vietnam and for the CIA.
I was pretty young and naïve at the time, and I did not think much of it. I thought it was normal. In retrospect, it was a little suspicious.

Father was a major player, did a ton of federal time and basically missed out until I was about 15. Nothing really glorious about the life style. Most people I knew from my dad are dead, jail, broke, or completely barred from ever stepping foot in US again.
I’ve met a few cartel guys that have the tattoos up and down to prove it, nice guys in a personal setting. You’re still always uneasy in how you say things at times just due to that vibe you get off them.

Dadgum. Any interesting stories from your dad (or the cartel guys)? What did he ship, coke?

A former business partner and I were Chicago-based financial advisers who laundered money for a Mexican drug cartel. My partner and the trucking company owners who move the cash skimmed $8 million, which caused our cartel contact to kill my partner, his fiancée, and the father-son trucking company owners. To save my own life, I useed a promotional flier my partner had shown me as the inspiration for a spur-of-the-moment claim that the Ozarks are a good potential location for laundering, and that if allowed to live, I would wash $500 million in five years. Partly persuaded, the cartel gave me a few days to replace the $8 million my partner stole, which I did by liquidating all my personal assets and closing all the company accounts. The Cartel then told me to move my family to the Ozarks and prove his claim by laundering the $8 million in three months. My wife was having an affair with this dude. She followed his advice to leave me and take our two children and as much money as she can secure, which caused the Cartel to have the dude she was banging killed as a warning to her to keep the family together.

Mostly weed, the guys that are lifers and dead were the ones that went into coke. There are tons of stories that go from South America all the way to Laos/Lebanon/and Thailand. A lot of prison stories from maxwell Air Force base, which he served 3 years there. He could actually leave the prison Daily and come back by 7, he just had to sleep there. I’ve never actually asked the price it cost to have that arrangement. He’s actually meeting with a writer pretty soon in BR to discuss book/show stuff, he’s just held out. Since my mom has passed, I think a lot of the stuff that could embarrass her is the main reason.
In Laos, to go to the mountains and get product and bring it back required a 16 truck convoy and everyone had weapons traveling through. In Eastern Europe, when my mom was stuck in Romania with me for two years.. my dad had to send supplies due to the communist party, you would have to send double because the soldiers would take half. One of the generals had a weird obsession with camel cigarettes and jack Daniels, so that would have to be included in any supply drop by the crate load.
It all started back in Gainesville in the 60s, imagine unloading a plane that they crashed in some field in the middle of the night and hauling arse.
The cartel guys, let’s just say a couple I met our brothers and known as “los monaguillos” which translates to altar boys...

I’m a retired Federal LEO. I’ve known lots of very high level drug traffickers which go way up the ranks of that Cali Cartel.
I once had a high ranking member of the notorious Cocaine Cowboys (Miami branch of the cartel) threaten to kill me.
Most of them are rats who would sell out their mother to get out of jail.
