I did for about a year right out of high school. I worked the 2nd shift for a company pouring epoxy table tops. 3PM-11:30 Mon - Fri and every other Saturday. I also worked 6AM - 2:30 PM Mon - Fri and every other Saturday installing satellites, antennas, mobile phones (bag phones), and surround sound systems.

That was in '94 and '95. I stacked up a lot of cash that year.

Pouring the epoxy table tops kind of sucked. There were a lot of fumes and those ovens were hot as hell.

Yeah the romance for my wrench turning days quickly fades come July

I don’t mind hopping on a forklift from time to time when needed.

Last manufacturing plant I walked through was a John Deere one when we toured it and met with the engineers on how to solve an issue with small tractors we use on pto driven pond aerators. The new EPA regs that led to regen on tractors caused them to run the PTO too fast on the equipment causing gearbox failures.

From what I saw, them baws ain’t working hard on the floor. You’d think of a plant as a place where it’s hot, crowded, and lines of people working pouring sweat over a constantly moving assembly line.

Nah. Place was spaced out, clean, and work was done at snails pace. You’d see a section with partially put together equipment and one guy might turn a few bolts or one with a checklist look something over. Then they’d have a break. I remember thinking, wow these guys get paid all that money with benefits for this joke of a job?

fricking unions. No wonder American cars, tractors, etc are so expensive. They probably had 4x the people necessary in order to cover the slack.

refinery/chemical plant will make more money than you with better benefits.

I will say these are a different animal than what I just described. Those baws, especially maintenance crews and such, work hard.

I was referring to unionized manufacturing plants that make cars, machinery, etc. Some are a fricking joke

A client of mine has a plant in Tennessee which is having to shutdown profitable manufacturing lines with orders because they cannot find workers at $100k+ a year.

I do wonder what Trumps solution is to this considering deportations and stricter immigration along with tariffs to encourage more American manufacturing investment. Where will the workers for that new manufacturing come from?

Us in the catfish industry want less imports and more sales of domestically produced catfish, but even if we had more sales the plants can’t find the labor to process more. They have anywhere from 50-80 people not show up for work every day at the processor I sell to. Can’t fire them, because there’s nobody to replace them. So they run the show and management just has to deal with it.

Until fedgov cuts down welfare and snap benefits, it will continue. People will have to go hungry in order to go to work. Too many getting entitlements that just sit at home
