You don't need to raise cattle. Just get 10 wooded acres and put your house in the middle of it. Get some chickens if you need some pets.

Everybody I know that's ever moved from the suburbs to the country would never move back.

I always say that if I could start over again (I'm 61) I would buy more land.

I predict one day the guy with a 10+ acre plot of land in the country will be able to survive while the rest of us fight over the leftover scraps in the garbage cans.

America cannot continue in this Biden insanity indefinitely. Somethings got to give. People just believe the shelves at their local market will always be stocked with the necessities. The longer this imbecile remains in office the harder it will become for America to crawl out of the mess he created.

Whoever that one person is, if your cow is out they will somehow step out onto the road in front of their car.

If you have a cow or two, they’ll be just as much trouble/pain in the arse as 25+.

If you decide to raise and feed out a couple butcher calves every year don't let your wife and kids name them
THIS! My wife was visiting her parents and pulled a calf out of several feet of snow about six weeks ago and put it in the garage, went to Tractor Supply and purchased a calf blanket and named the calf 'Maggie Moo'.

Now my BIL, who runs the ranch, says my SIL has babied the calf and treats it like a pet. He blames my wife for being too kind-hearted and told me she was ridiculed in the FFA in high school for being too nice and always wanting to save the animals instead of raise them for slaughter.

For just a few cows you can train them. Every evening beat on the side of a bucket with a scoop and throw them a little sweet feed on the ground.

When they get out, and they will, beat on the bucket and they will follow you.

The cow itself is easy. Maintaining the fence sucks

Underrated post. This is exactly right.

Our family used to have 60 head on 150 combined family acres. The cow part is fairly simple… if you just want to keep one to keep the grass down. It’s like a big lazy dog that eats grass. You just have to supplement it in the winter with feed and hay.

The fence is the pain in the arse. We used to have 2 guys hired to go around the fence every Saturday to perform constant maintenance. And I still had to go out in the week and fix stuff. The fence went through pine woods so limbs were constantly falling on it.

That operation never made any money. Constantly lost. It was kept around strictly for tax purposes.
