There are more possible chess games than atoms in the entire universe.

Think about that!

I have found an old mail order form for the more expensive one in the OP. It was $300 plus $25 for the board, back in 1961.

That's what sucks. If you play someone who plays a lot, you have to try and figure out what pattern they are using.

You have to know some sequences.

I'm going to say hell no.

There are more atoms in a grain of sand than known stars.
You're taking an inconcievable number here.

Played chess a good bit as a child. Was never really good, but loved the hell out of it

Number of possible chess games = 10^120

Number of atoms in the observable Universe = 10^80 or so

I live in Gonzales and would love to join a chess organization.

It's a mathematically proven thing. You do have to change the phrasing of it from how he said it though. It's the "observable universe." If you just say "universe" then technically the number of atoms could be infinite because it could theoretically go on forever.

It's the same sort of thing with a standard deck of cards. Every time you shuffle a deck of cards the odds are overwhelming that that particular order has never and will never again happen.

Baton Rouge has an active chess club. They meet at the Jones Creek Library on Saturdays. Have to be a USCF member to play rated games (like $30 a year I think), but they would probably play casual games with you too. BR club tends to do 120/15 time controls iirc. There's a facebook that you can check out that has information. I haven't been in quite a while and have let my membership lapse. Unless you are a serious player you will probably get your arse kicked, but I guess that's just part of the learning process.

For New Orleans people I am pretty sure there are at least a couple of active clubs. One used to meet at Cafe Fatoush, but that's closed now. I'm not sure where they meet now. Maybe Cafe Envie in the quarter.
