I bought my grandson a heavy duty canvas tool bucket.

In finding a job coach him towards commercial work. Retail in Karens attic in the summer time is not nice.

School districts are a good entry

For some reason I'd lose a diamond 6" crescent every year or two.

What I really wish I'd had back in the day was something like Isotunes earbuds. Residential isn't too bad but once you're in a mech room environment from day to day, the hearing really starts to go. Now that I'm retired I wear them or regular ear inserts when doing any type of noisy work.

Can never have enough flash lights. I would always lose or forget them at jobs when I was in the field. Get one that is magnetic.

Also get him a small roadside emergency service kit for his truck and a battery jumper kit. He’ll be driving a lot and it may come in handy one day.

Chest tool bag he can tighten up is a great idea. Especially when you need two hands to crawl around.

It doesn't hang or sag or drag your pants to the floor.

They make a bunch of different types. You don't want one that is loose and hangs everywhere .

Nice set of digital gauges. Fieldpiece makes nice gauges. As others said, Fluke multi meter. Circuit tester to check for voltage that can fit in his pocket.

The commercial guys I see carry a small tool bag, have old school yellow jacket gauges. They have multi meters and voltage meter with clamp for high voltage.

His must often used tool will be the nut drivers. Get him a quality set of magnetic nut drivers.

Multimeter would need a current checking clamp.

I’m not in hvac but prefer purchasing my own tools. Best gift might be a gift card and let him select what he needs.

If you get him a meter get him one that measures capacitance. It's measured by microfarads.

And yes a nut driver or an automatic dewalt screwdrivers are a nice to have. You just rotate the handle clockwise and it'll keep turning to tighten. Counter clockwise same thing to loosen.
