me. If I walk out of a dealership and they made $100, then I am fine with that.

Not even that. If they made $500 a car you could live with that.

It's that they start off wanting to make $2k off of you and all it takes is patience to wear them down. Constant mind numbing 'negotiation' to get down to $500.

Basically wasting your time to make money.

That is why the internet has killed the high salaries in that business.

Yup - we sell low and we sell high, makes no difference to me. It’s all about numbers. If my dealership sells 750 vehicles. My new car department averages $2100 profit per car , my used car department averages $1800 profit per car, my finance department averages $500 per contract, my wholesale department makes $50,000, I am a happy dealer.

For example are Hondas the easiest cars to sell?

No one brand is going to be a guarantee easy sell. Location and the local clientele play a big role.

I have been with an Auto group for 8+ years as an I.T. guy. My brother works for them and makes 150k+ selling Kia's.

The store he works at is in a mile strip with a lot of car dealerships. Busy area with lots of foot traffic/tire kickers/ or as they call them in sales ups. They still have to work the phones and get people in. The clientele for Kia is a lot of boges or bad credit people. Those people can be bullied. Someone with bad credit will just be glad you can get them in a new car. They will sign their life away and often get ripped the hell off.

Put a Kia dealership in a Nice upscale area and they may not do as good due to the local clientele being richer and not wanting Kia's.

Put a Kia dealership in a shithole location without a lot of foot traffic and they may struggle depending on the salesmens ability to work the phone and get folks in the door.

A more specific question... when is the best time to find a deal for a patient buyer? Black Friday, end of December, something else?

Thinking about a 2020 once the 2021s are out.

The “ Deals” take place when the manufacturer has too much inventory on the ground, in-transit & in-production. Unfortunately with plants closing for COVID , rental car companies not turning inventory, trades WAY down, “ DEAL” are tough.

Here is a “ Deal “. Most people do not realize on a LEASE there is a “ Residual Value” price to buy their car at the end of a LEASE and a dealer buy price. I personally negotiated with a dealership this end of lease price for my brother and saved him $8K vs the “ lease end “ buyer paying residual value.

If I know which vehicle I want why can’t I just go straight to the finance mgr and check out?

Why do you I have to deal with some salesperson and pay that persons salary?

It would save me a lot of time and money if I could just deal with the person that hands me the keys once I pay the dealership

He will tell you that you can. Just pay the sticker price. :/

The question is why can't they just price the car to where you are able to do that. The reason why is that there is a bunch of money to be made separating the uneducated from their money. Scamming people.

General Motors tried, it was called SATURN. No negotiation, Americans hated the concept of no negotiation & SATURN went out of business.

Now Carmax sells 300k used cars a year by “not haggling” with baked in 3-5 pounders!

Saturn went out of business because they abandoned their product line and made a bunch of rebranded shite.

People like you say it's because of the purchase model, but everything from Tesla to TexasAutoDirect has shown people want low no haggle pricing.

I don't think Saturn going out of business had anything to do with the removal of negotiations. Saturn sold a lot of cars and had high customer satisfaction ratings. It was bungled by GM management, who couldn't get out of the way.

Tesla will now pave the way once they break the ridiculous and outdated lobbying power that dealers have over state legislatures.

It is like anything else the better you get, the more you deals you close, the more money you make. I have friends that moved into F&I that make a very good living for themselves.

My next car is coming from either Texas Auto Direct or maybe a friend or family member.

I bought my truck from texas auto direct. Found exactly what I was looking for on the website, test drove one night after work, picked up the truck the next afternoon after all the paperwork was done online.

I probably had less than an hour total invested in the actual transaction.

I had spent about 20 hours the previous week or two trying to haggle with some other places.

frick all that, I'll buy every used car from texas auto from now on.

Hubby is in wholesale parts. When we bought our Subaru back in May, they didn’t come off the price at all. The salesman admitted that they get a salary and not a commission.
