Ask me how awesome it is when you get your DPF jacked because they thought it was a catalytic converter.

Driver comes into work, hooks trailer up- heads off down the road. Calls.

“Hey boss, something is bad wrong with my truck- it’s screaming”

Pulls over and finds the diesel particulate filter missing.

People who buy bulk converters are scumbags. I see them advertise online a lot.

Yeah, they should really be prosecuted. Or how about a law against buying loose catalytic converters at all, without some kind of license / paper trail?

Probably cost as much or more than a cat.

That’s quite a racket he has going. Take one, and put it back on for a grand a pop.

Apparently Tundras are a hot commodity.

Honda Elements are the one I'm aware of.

I guess it's anything reasonably high off the ground, especially if it relies heavily on catalytic conversion to stave off the emissions Nazis.

Happened to the girlfriend's car last year, and 3 of our neighbors on the same night.

It should be made illegal to buy catalytic converters from anyone except a dealership.

Hers costed $1300 including installation, and the thieves get like $30

It appears the cats on Tundra's are somewhat downstream, exhaust pipe on both ends, making them easier to get at. On many/most GM's they are right off the exhaust manifold or part of it, so much more difficult to saw off.

Or take the lift kit out and lower the vehicle so that they can't crawl under it without jacking it up. They look for trucks that are lifted so they can get under it easily.

That is 100% not true. You can floor jack up almost any vehicle in seconds.

Sure, but all else held equal it's a lot easier to pull that kind of stunt without having to lug around a jack.

There’s no fricking way a catalytic converter contains enough platinum to be worth $1500. There’s a microscopic layer of platinum coating ceramic parts….it’s so thin that it is undetectable to the human eye

The robbers didn't even bother to pick up their sawzaws when they hit our fleet. Jacks, saws etc were left behind.

My family owns a body shop and salvage yard and just recently shut it all down. Sold all catalytic converters from the vehicles in the salvage yard and made serious bank off of it. Gonna sell the engines then crush and sel the cars. Shutting down is going to produce the best year in the business’s 60+ year history

I replaced one of my catalytic converters recently and I am getting ready to do the other one. I haven’t been able to find anyone to take the one that I have.

Damn. That sounds like a pretty well-organized operation. Do you have cameras?

Probably because it's a potato now, not a cat. That's why you replaced it, right?
