Having trouble executing the "Points to Line" feature under the Feature tab in the Data Management Tools tab. I actually have trouble with this often. Sometimes it decides to work and sometimes it doesn't. When I click on the Error message after it pops up on the lower right side of the screen, it says "ERROR 001143: Background server threw an exception."

Anyone can help me out with this?

I'm using AcrMap 10.2.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like the background server threw an exception.

Check that and get back to us.

I just ran it in 10 and had no problem. I don't use that function much, well ever, so I am not much help. How many points do you have?

Also, google the phrase and see if you can find the same thing for an ESRI forum. That has helped me in the past.

ETA: I had nothing else checked, just the input file and the output file name and hit run.

Figured it out. Simple fix. I had my tools executing in the background, allowing me to continue working while anything was processing. Apparently too much stuff going on can throw it off. I enabled it to operate in the foreground (making me wait to do anything until it finished processing) and it worked.

I know sometimes when I am exporting a large file to CAD, mine will completely shut down, or even bringing in large orthos. So, the idea of a lot going in the background makes perfect sense.

My old rule for ArcMap was to let it do it's thing and not touch it. I used to have to save big jobs for closing time. I'd have half a dozen computer running overnight operations. Arc is a CPU hog.

10.3 just came out, but yes, 10.X is much better at large images than 9.X.

I feel like this program is Greek to most college students. I was fortunate enough to realize that I should pay close attention to everything in the one GIS class I was required to take while at LSU. It has paid off big time.

It will. Everyone is moving towards it. I know our department is getting a big overhaul to it. I love it. Although I am waiting on a Data Transfer to finish while on TD.

For civil engineering, it should receive equal time to cad application exposure imo, especially with the ever increasing integration of the two.

I agree with this, I am very glad I studied it while in school. Though I wish I could stay more up to date on the things I learned that I don't utilize everyday. It's errors and crashes can be very frustrating though it seems much more stable now than it used to be.
