im not big on politics or economics but i would think 9/11 and the whole worldwide covid pandemic may have had something to do with this

My comment wasn’t really about what caused the economic conditions, but rather the rhetoric from the right.
Clinton in office - gotta balance the budget, can’t blow up the deficit.
Bush in office - no concerns with the deficit.
Obama in office - all of a sudden deficits are a concern again, and it lead to the Tea Party movement.
Trump in office - deficits no longer a concern.
They’ll be a concern again when a Dem is back in office.
