Which league?
My stepson Jaxxyn needs a new coach. The one he has now is an idiot.

Thank goodness my kids rather fish durning the spring than play travel baseball! Both do/did rec ball and that’s it.
Fishing is awesome
But your kids did rec because they weren’t athletic. It’s ok to admit that.

Here’s one that’ll piss off a lot of folks around here
My organization has been around awhile. Year after year we add more teams in all ages that aren’t very talented but want to “play travel ball” for “this team”. Parents gladly pay the fees. They get to tell their friends their son(s) now play travel baseball for this great organization.
All those fees cover coaches pay and 3 teams fees for the entire year
Why would that piss off anyone? It's pretty obvious that some organizations have shitty teams that are only in place to make money.
If the parents are stupid enough to still sign up for it, then that's on them. It gets tricky when the parents that are stupid enough to part with their money just so Blayzen can be on a travel team start bitching because their teams sucks. Just because you pay $$$$ for Blayzen to play doesn't mean he's going to win.
That being said, I do have more respect for organizations that stick to fewer, more quality teams.

How hard is it to put something like this together? I would love to be a part of a team that plays ball all summer but doesn't play year round.
What are the average costs to get in a local tournament and can I just goggle these tournaments? I have done literally zero research on this because I didn't think these types of teams existed.
There are USSSA tournaments in New Orleans and Chalmette almost every weekend. Some are free and the teams pay the umpires at the plate. There are OTC tournaments in Gulfport, Hammond, Thibodaux and Denham Springs that a few hundred or pay at the plate. Perfect Game has tournaments in Baton Rouge similar at Traction. UACS has tournaments in Madisonville, Luling, and other venues.

yea i dunno why that would piss people off
the whole problem with youth baseball in general is that its gotten so god damn competitive at the HS level that you end up having to play travel to have the skill set to play in baseball
but there are a lot of teams in South LA that only do like 1-2 tournamnets in the fall then play march until mid june and make sure their kids play other sports.
but you have to be doing practice on your own to keep up.
i was talking to a buddy the other day and his kid is about to go to coach pitch so he is looking at it and he is just like wtf and when did rec get so bad and none of the kids really want to compete?
i know im in it so sometimes i have to step back and i get why it can seem insane to a lot of people, mainly to those that never played higher level HS ball for sure. Not all my boys play baseball, i just encourage them to do the sports they like and work hard at them to be the best they can be.
but if you kid would rather hunt, fish, play golf or whatever....do it

Louisiana Fire Soccer was like this when they took over the city and before Jesters, JPSA and other groups formed. They were using the lower teams to support the top reams with their fees. At one time Louisiana Fire was paying three DOCs around 100k a year each even though all had other high school coaching jobs,.

yep and pg and 2d tournaments in lafayette or lc or crowley every weekend. PG and 2d in BR every weekend, and north LA has 2d 2-3x per month
just start a team and only play local and the amount of times you want to play
dont have to do every weekend. most teams only do like 10 tournaments in about an 18 week period between mid feb to mid june.

We have kicked the tires of travel ball recently and this post is the exact reason we are hesitant. We have a group of boys all the same age and go to the same school that have been playing county ball together since Kindergarten (going into 5th grade this fall). Several of us have thought about joining as one team and playing travel during 5th grade and before middle school ball. Play local tournaments only and practices a few time before the first tournament and through the season and then stop.
It's sounds too good to be true l. Im afraid it might open up a can of warms and next thing I know my wife is vaping and has tats all over her and I'm pacing around in a Hardy t-shirt yelling at the umps from the parking lot because I got kicked out.

It is COMPLETELY off the fricking rails. When my oldest was about 8, we were on a team full of kids who'd played rec ball.. but it was a team that is now known as a local travel ball organization. I think we paid like $150 that year and it was for unis, bags, etc. Again.. just normal, rec coaches pitch. Our future travel ball adventure ended rather abruptly when one of the mom's was mentioning she was working on getting the money for her 12 year old's team. She was just talking matter-of-factly to me and, I'll never forget this.. she said they were raising the season fees to $2700!! It was like a bomb fricking exploded in my face. I was like "WHAT?!" I could completely not fricking believe it. I finished my conversation with her, walked back over to my wife and told her we had to get the frick out of this. It was an eventual, total money mill for these maniac coach/owner/pariahs. I was immediately doing the math in my head and I was just totally overwhelmed.
That was probably a decade ago. And it's gotten extraordinarily worse ever since.
I've gone out of my way now to tell anyone who has a kid on a t-ball team with friends from school, church, etc. People who have no idea this is coming.

Some of this is hyperbole. $2700 would be on the upper end of most travel ball organizations even today. Sure, there are some that you pay $3500/year, but those usually come with a full practice facility.
Most range from $1000-2000/year, but you can still find one off teams and smaller organizations for $500 or so.

dunno where the hell yall see that at.
and where do you live that has middle school ball?
and you realize by 5th grade, going into 11u, be lucky if you can even win a pool play game in AA.
those kids are stupid behind

Travel baseball is the ruination of rec ball and baseball for youths in general. Most kids i know that played are now upperclassmen and are getting out of the sport from being burned out by travel ball. The parents and coaches are awful and suck the fun out of a great sport.

Y'all beat some good teams to win it, at least on Sunday.

exactly
my middle kid plays on one of the better teams in the state and has 2 non dad paid coaches and even with uniforms its not over 2k. Traction black and a very few others are like 3k or so....i dunno any over that.
my youngest is completely sponsored other than umpire fees.
