You must've not read the fine print. The 25k interval is only to be used with the secondary filter system, and changing that at 15k. You can use the same oil, but must switch the filter

I need some of that in my life
An older TDi 6spd Jetta will get anywhere from 45mpg to 55mpg on the highway normally. With the way you have said you drive, I have heard of people getting 55+mpg.

.....then the EPA stuck it's nose in, and the consumption went down to around 35-40mpg

Thanks EPA

I usually go 8,000 using Mobil One and a Toyota filter. I could go more. But I like keeping my truck engine clean. So 7-8k is a good spot to rotate the tires, tops of the fluids, clean the block, check everything with a UV light for leaks (I have dies in everything), and do a visual inspection.

I depend on my truck for work. So I need to know when a breakdown is coming. Usually if you are diligent and keep up on maintenance you can keep it going for a very long time. (transmission excluded, when it's their time, they gonna die)

Mobil 1 is outdated. Synthetics change with technology, Mobil 1 hasn't, at least not for their base.

You shouldn't believe everything you read on BITOG.

OP can't reply.
He's busy schooling all the engineers at Porsche, BMW, and GM.

Know a guy with a F-250 SD with a 2V 5.4L with around 450k on it and runs Mobil Super and/or Castrol GT on a "whenever I get around to it" OCI. Maybe 6 months...maybe a year.

I don't anyone that changes oil every 3K.
Hang around a mechanic shop and you'll be surprised. Many businesses still sell the "3500 mile change" and write that number on the lil sticker for the upper left of windshields.

Have you ever noticed how heavy an empty oil weighs? That's dirt, and that's after 5K miles! The synthetic oil may still be good but the filter isn't doing the job.

That is not dirt. That's oil that the filter material has absorbed.

You don't get dirt in your oil. You get combustion byproducts that blow past the rings. Any decent filter not a Fram should do the trick for 10k miles using synthetic.

I've seen other people do oil analysis on synthetics and find that they're still good after 15,000 miles.

Yeah, they count on the ignorance of the general population. My gf thought a 3k OCI was normal until I convinced her otherwise. Showed her how to shop around and buy a few OCI's worth of good oil for less than one oil change from a shop would charge and do the work herself.

I did 10K with aimsoil when I was running it, and the oil always still looked like it could've gone a little longer. Was too nervous to do it though.
Did 7K w/ mobil 1 and it always looked about ready to change.
I now use conventional cause I am poor and change every 5K.

What year are we talking about, I'd love to find one like that for my commuter car.

How can you tell visually if an oil is good or not?

Pre-2006 IIRC. That's when the diesel truck emissions stuff kicked in hard. Another round of standards happened in 2008, and another in 2010 I believe. All of those progressively brought down fuel mileage

To be honest, after probably 1500mi, you can't. If you could do any self test, smelling would be better IMHO

I just get an oil change every 5k miles or so. I get a free car wash with them so its not really a big deal as far as cost and it never takes more than an hour, including the car wash.

I think so. It has to be a manual and you need to drive conservatively(70mph) to get above the 50 mark. I think the Jettas get those high numbers, but the passat also gets 40mpg+

I'd read around the internet forums b/c I am no Jetta enthusiast

My maintenance is done by Toyota dealership on my tundra and they use synthetic 0w 40 and only change it every 10,000 miles.

I did it for the first two and i couldn't take it anymore. I started bringing it in every 7000 miles and have switched to m1 just because I've never had any issues with it.
