Just drove over the river on my way to work and noticed how high it is getting. At 7:00 am in PV it was supposed to be 6.6’ but instead it’s sitting at 7.29’ and rising at a good clip. It has already risen a foot since midnight. The crest is supposed to be 9.1’ but I’m betting it hits 10’ before it’s over. Gonna take some folks living in lower areas nearby by surprise.

ETA: 7.58’ at 8:15 but the forecast was actually revised down from 9.1’ to 9.0’. I guess since Denham has already crested they’re figuring no more additional water than expected is coming down, especially since rain looks to be over with now.

I wonder why it’s so much ahead of schedule in PV. Is it shallower there than in Denham?

I think the automated gauges post in real time to the website graph.
I believe the forecast part of the graphs are compiled based on current and (short term) projected rainfall. Therefore updated less often --few hours lag.

This is based solely on the observations of someone who checks those gauges rather obsessively since the events of 2016.

Hopefully RDS or Duke or some other forecaster can shed insider insight.

Certainly depends on where the rain falls. Look at the comite by Joor is falling. Tells me the rain was a touch further south so the gauges further south saw a more immediate spike.

Just checked and the 7 AM update is still way above the projected. The gauge at Manchac Point is even steeper and is at 11.2 now and was projected to crest at 11.5 on Tuesday.

Interesting. That’s just a few miles north of PV. It’ll be interesting to see where it ends up cresting and like I said, I’m betting some folks end up getting surprised.

Having watched these gauges all the time growing up I compare current rate of increase to the projected crest. I hate to say this but I use math and look basically at the rate of change and create my own estimates. Weather service does a nice job but the rainfall amount projections and where they specifically drop the rain are highly variable.

So what are you saying?

I am saying that the rate of increase was faster than expected. If you basically create an algorithm that shows the decreasing rate of increasing water level you can calculate the new projected high yourself. So for example in the last hour it went up 0.12 vs the 0.15 the previous hour. That means it went up 80% of the prior hour. I would project the next hour it would go up at most 80% of 0.12 or basically increasing 0.096. Then take 80% of that the following hour and it is 0.08. So by 11:15am I would think it is close to 7.88 feet. Looking at the gauge upstream if it has crested or near then that means the rate of change would slow further.

It’s 7.91. Impressive.
