Chevrolet to discontinue Sonic, Ford to discontinue Fiesta, Taurus, report says

General Motors is reportedly planning to kill the Chevrolet Sonic while Ford Motor plans to ditch the Fiesta in the U.S., spelling the death of two subcompact cars.
The Wall Street Journal, which reported the plans Wednesday, also said that Ford plans to ax the full-size Taurus sedan while GM is considering ending the full-size Impala sedan.

Asked for comment on Ford's plans, spokesman Mike Levine said Wednesday that "passenger cars, including Fiesta and Taurus, remain an important part of our lineup.”
He noted that the company has already announced plans to make trucks, SUVs and crossovers nearly 90% of its lineup by 2020.
Have to wonder where this will leave those two companies when/if fuel prices climb again. The Fiesta and Sonic are both very competitive subcompact cars. They are no longer popular in North America.
The Lincoln Continental and Ford Fusion are also not going to exist after the current generation, with their production capacity utilized for crossovers and SUVs.
Hyundai has already killed the Azera sedan. Chrysler canceled the 200 sedan. Nissan may be merging the Maxima with the Altima soon.

No more fighting in cars?

Crossovers are the future
They are, sadly, my least favorite vehicles on the road. Most mainstream models are basically minivans without the sliding doors.

My observation is that people who can afford it drive trucks or SUV's. Sedans are becoming the car for po' folks

It's no coincidence that we are flooded with crap like the Honda CR-V or Ford Edge just a few years after studies revealed that females now make most of the automobile buying decisions.

Terrible news for the Maxima

Very few SUVs smaller than a Tahoe out there. Almost everything considered "SUV" is a lame crossover.
4Runner is soldiering on. God bless it.

This is a feminine looking vehicle?
I guess Toyota makes the girliest vehicles out there since women love 4Runners.

People want the "car" feel, but the SUV size and ground clearance.
Hence, the Crossover.
I drive a Subaru Outback FWIW . It's a badass vehicle. Same ground clearance as a Silverado so I can hop curbs if I need to, AWD is awesome, and its got some feisty pop with the bigger engine option. Its a blast to drive and it absolutely crushes bad weather.
And it ain't shitty on the inside. Full loaded with every imaginable option in the 2017 was like 36k off the assembly line.

Very much so.
Ford needs the Bronco badly.

I rode in a Subaru Outback for the first time the other day. Definitely a cool little car / crossover.

Most mainstream crossovers offer neither. They are not as good off road as a real SUV, they usually can't tow much of anything, and offer worse fuel economy than a sedan.
Your Outback is actually one of the few alternatives to a real SUV that actually has respectable performance off road, in the snow, and on pavement. It's a great station wagon with few competitors. It should be more popular than it actually is.

Your second sentence has nothing to do with what you were replying to. Most crossovers offer exactly what the first guy said they do.

Perhaps it's not as popular because most buyers don't care for or need good offroad ability.

If I want an efficient compact car why would I buy that American crap when I can get a Honda or Toyota?
