Never heard of it but very interesting.

Not related but I remember years back when Kenny Chesney of all people, talked about riding a jet ski from the start and to end of the Mississippi River. I don't think he ever did it though

I'm not saying don't do it, but take what you think your budget will be and double it.
How Much It Cost to do the Great Loop

There are so many variables to total costs. These folks give you a look at how they did it & the spent just over $40k for the year.

Some of that $40k was groceries, which will be an expense if you stayed home.

These must pale in comparison to view boating thru east New Orleans, lower 9th, and even earlier thru north BR. I bet plant lit up at night is wonderful.

Might miss that, I was planning on the Tombigbee waterway.

Probably safer.

curious as to when you are planning to do the gulf crossing. I live on the ICW now and have wondered when the Loopers are moving through. I have read places where getting to Lake Okeechobee is interesting and needs to be well thought out so wondering if there is a consensus about when to make that run, given these are cruisers and not off-shore boats.

how far are you in your plan?

I am about 7-10 years out (just thinking about when I may retire). I can work remotely so I plan on living aboard a boat for the last 3-4 years of working.

I am looking for a "starter" boat to have on Lake Erie. My ex and kids live up near Cleveland am I am spending more and more time up there. I figure if I get a 332 or 3 stateroom Loop worthy boat and start sailing it on the Great Lakes in the next couple of years it will be good experience.

It won't be the same as handling it in current and whatnot, but I will have to get really comfortable docking, fuel docking, maintaining, etc. It should help some.

Yeah the friend and his wife who are thinking about going are amazing people whom I love dearly, but there is no way we are sharing a ~45-50 foot boat for a year. We have vacationed together and travel together, but 24x7 for a year is different. That is just me though. Like I said if it weren't for needing a first mate I wouldn't;t be considering re-marriage lol.

Most of the people I see who cut the corner for the gulf crossing do so at night. I think this would be about the time of year to do that. For insurance purposes, cruisers usually can't be south of a point in Alabama (can't recall off the top of my head) until after hurricane season is officially over. Then they head to Mobile and the inter-coastal to make the crossing.
