I completely agree with you on this point, but obesity is an addiction to food just like alcohol, drugs, etc. Obesity leads other health issues, so dropping the weight is a win (absent possible side effects). The question should be WHY is a person self-sabotaging with food. That's the issue that needs to be solved at the same time.
It's such a band-aid approach to health, and it irks me. It's the reason many are so sick. We've been trained to react to health problems instead of just being on offense from the start.
And don't get me started on attempting to explain caloric deficit to some of these people. Nope, it's their hormones. Couldn't possibly be hand to mouth disease. It's a merry go round of disinformation that costs people tons of money and their health.
I have little faith, at this point, in the majority of Americans transitioning to a healthy lifestyle, on their own. So we can sit and bemoan the sorry state of American decision making as our healthcare system comes down around us, or we can actually do something about it. Even if it's not the ideal option we would like.

What would be your plan to turn around the obesity epidemic if not using these drugs?
Well that's the winning spirit.
Again, obesity is an addiction to food. Treat it like any other addiction, and set people up for a lifetime of good health. And stop acting like people are so pathetic and weak. We have a country full of people stressed out of their minds who comfort themselves with food and self-sabotage their health.
Crazy idea, but maybe, just maybe, a psychological approach could be used in tandem with these drugs.

That's fair. And yes, I could (clearly) go on for days about the American approach to health care. It just doesn't have to be like this.

You are not going to get the majority of people in the US to diet and exercise. It just isn't happening.
Banning most of the shite that isn’t allowed in food products in most 1st world countries would be a good start

I agree with this, but don't see it happening. It would take the government intervening and they would probably screw it up and make everything cost even more.

You have to fix the root cause of the issue. You can’t just treat the symptoms for generations to come.
Posted on 10/4/24 at 3:37 pm to DCtiger1
Agreed, but I think the cause is multi-faceted, and garbage in our food is a cause, but it's not the only cause. Replace hfcs with 100% real organic sugar, and you'll still have people drinking thousands of excess calories a week in their soda's and "coffees", as just one example.

Don’t tell that to the fast food eating, cig smoking brethren of the OT.
Trashy folk around here take pride in being fat and trashy

Educate citizens on the truth about sugar vs fat.
Ban all tv ads related to any pharma companies. Either revamp or eliminate the FDA as it is in its current form. FDA employees should not be allowed to work for vaccine or pharma companies for a cooling off period of time. We have a serious problem in our country, and it’s not the citizens, it’s the fed gov. And this is not earth shattering.

I take the compounded version of Monjaro... ive lost 80 pounds, plus I do workout daily (swimming), I eat better and less, and I barely drink alcohol now. I ballooned after my 3rd knee surgery 15 years ago. Early this year, I couldn't play a round of golf or walk 50 yards. Now, I play golf a lot and walk a couple of miles on days I don't swim.
I was on a cruise in August and I didn't take my shot to see how I would do without it on a vacation and I actually lost 2 pounds. I spend a lot less money on food and going out now.

the 20yo OTers with a Level 10 metabolism will hrmpf and haw and call you names and tell you that you 'did it wrong' but this is an amazing story
good for you. 80 pounds and probably your risk for 27 different obesity-fueled diseases has probably dropped 90%.
amazing to me how OT bitches and bitches about 'fatties' then when they find a way to lose weight they get abused again for doing it the wrong way.
can't WAIT for these 20yo's to turn 50 and try to 'exercise their way skinny'.

But obesity is caused by overeating. This particular drug causes you to eat less, so it actually treats the root cause.
Some say it’s a food addiction, so that could be the root cause.

It’s called high grocery and fast food prices, people have had to cut back
Posted on 10/5/24 at 5:51 am to Bjorn Cyborg
I get that people are hopeful but there is a major flaw— people are not solving the habits and issues that created the obesity — fat = inflammation. Just because Ozempic is shrinking the fat cells doesn’t mean the extreme metabolic issues have disappeared or the fact that the gut is still, in many ways, wrecked. This is in addition to the side effects of the drug and the inevitable misuse and abuse of it.

Probably not for long. The FDA just took one of the weight loss drugs off of the shortage list which means that people can’t pay $400/month for it anymore and the price is going back to $2000+ a month.
I would like to know who butters the bread of these government servants. If drug companies, they need to be reported on faster than The Advocate reporting on a new conflict of interest story on the Jeff Landry administration.
But media would dare touch the drug companies since of the big media is on the drug company’s dole.

No , no it really isn't...

1% of people have negative side effects from ozempic, there is a significant decreased reliance on a healthcare system where 50%+ of obese people require routine and increased healthcare needs.
And that's not how the pharma industry rolls.. their intent is to make customers got life.. that why they're pushing for this drug to be allowed as young as 6... Nothing fishy about that at all right??
The problem with the US population is that a large majority (no pun intended) doesn't understand the concept of how to actually lose weight nor does their physician... On top of that the onslaught of highly processed foods we consume many of which are banned in every other country is also a factor.. and dont get me started on the bogus arse food pyramid..
Simple fact is, people shouldn't be relying on some fairytale wonder drug and should just learn how to actually eat..
