Amazon bought that spot in NBR because it is close to what they need. Cheap labor that has few other options.

The unskilled labor pool in all of Louisiana is cheap.

They went with Cortana a giant site in a populated area intersected by two highways and didn’t flood. The site comes with preexisting connections for water, sewer, electricity, service road, multiple entry points, and a bus stop.

Yeah, I don't have any insight, but I don't imagine Amazon has trouble getting cheap labor anywhere in the nation. I really don't think it would have anything to do with the specifics of their property purchase within a certain city.

Even in places like Washington, if you can handle your $$$, Amazon provides a solid place on a resume while you look for better employment or finish school.

Only for low value employees.

High value employees can call their shots.

UPS, FedEx, Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc all treat their employees better.

Amazon/AWS has a churn and burn style of management.

I bet the people these companies employ are a little different than an Amazon warehouse person.

And yes I know some Amazon corporate folks and they are treated very damn well. A lot of the payout is based on the performance of the company for them, but that is how it should be.

I thought you had to be skilled to unionize.

I don’t consider janitors to be skilled but they have a union

You must be a union organizer.

In my state and I'm sure in others, Unions do a lot of good. Sure you have the run of the mill corrupt ones but in my line of work union reps are the ones who help set the wages for the industry for my state. You look at wages for the same job in other states and some are better and some are much lower. These jobs pay a lot better than 95% of the private sector in comparison.

This isn't some teacher union or other bullshite slacker type union where you get paid to sit on your arse and do jack shite. I'm not even in a union but I'm glad as frick that these union reps got us this great pay.

Ah yes. Because if you vote to unionize, to protect workers rights/work conditions/pay etc etc, it's going to turn you into a " socialist liberal". Or maybe they think "Unionizing" is supporting the Northern "Union Army" and no way is Johnny Reb going to do that! Good luck working slave labor at Amazon for minium pays and long hours. Idiots.

If labor is so cheap and available, and the workers have no other choice, why is Amazon paying well above the minimum wage?

Honestly, I think the employees were foolish to reject the union. But, the no-vote was strong and now their decision should be supported.

Wages that are set artificially, and not determined by the local labor market for the skill set required will always end badly for the employees in the long term, simple economics.

How does the unions getting everyone a higher pay, bad economics? How does an employee making higher pay than most of the private sector, end badly for the employee again?

I agree. Sometimes it’s hard to follow the logic around here. There’s an enduring opinion about the virtues of meritocracy, but most professionals are nothing more than interchangeable widgets. If work ethic and experience is truly important...why are people who get laid off in their 50s and 60s almost universally unemployable?

There’s no shortage of arguments that unions can negatively impact an economy. But, it’s because collective bargaining creates leverage for individuals that would otherwise be nothing more than a fungible object.

The drivers are subcontractors. Amazon doesn’t even own the Amazon vans.
