I posted this video in the Katrina thread couple weeks back but I’m still amazed by the video. I can’t imagine going through that and thinking I’m going to drown. Also, chicken please open the Katrina thread from 2005?

9:59 - Water is knee/waist deep
10:45 - Above the soffit
My grandmother was in Chalmette in a one-story and didn’t want to evacuate. We went over and picked her up on the way out. She 100% would not have survived.

I launched a boat at the foot of Veterans and motored through Lakeview to retrieve items from my home. It was bad.

That is some incredible and terrifying footage. The guy recording said it best, you have to go when they say you need to go. There’s no preparing for something of that magnitude.

quote:the video brought back a lot of sad memories. My dad’s house in Arabi came up off the foundation and floated down Judge Perez a few blocks. They have relocated to Ponchatoula.

My fixed income mother in law’s house in Chalmette was under 10-12 ft of water for Katrina, then a few weeks later Rita came and more water. Had homeowners Ins but her roof stayed on, so they paid ZERO. Thankfully she did have federal flood ins, which paid pennies on the dollar. Finally sold the shell of her former home for about 20k and counted herself lucky to get that. Moved to LivingstonParish.
We lived in Atlanta in 2005; it was horrible to see this unfolding onour TV. Like a SoLA 9/11 in slow mo. A lot of tears and guilt at not being with everybody. Tried to bring a mission team to NOLA in Sept, couldn’t get in; wound up helping in Pascagoula and Moss Point. My wife and I sneaked into NOLA in our car. I cried at what I saw. Worse than I expected so widespread.
So proud of the area residents and all the rest for risking their own lives to save people and animals. And those first responders, Nat Guard, out of state private citizens, church groups, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and countless others for all they did and gave to help. There is goodness in the world still, and light that still shines in the darkness.

Yeah man that video is crazy. I miss the old parish. I feel that even though he got out Katrina still killed my grandpa. His health declined after and died about 6 months later. He lost everything he knew.

Just had memory pictures pop up on facebook from two years ago of the floods around Baton Rouge.
My fixed income parents had dropped their damn flood insurance after 32 years of paying and five months later they got 7 feet of water.
Same deal, they sold the shell of the house and now are renting a small place. Horrible memories.

I hope we never have another Katrina but I can’t help but think it will happen again after seeing a lot of streets flooding in New Orleans after a regular thunderstorm rolls through with the pumps breaking down.

Just wanted to point out, rainfall flooding would have caused minimal issues in Nola during Katrina.
The damn outflow drainage canals were open to the lake, so the surge came in and walls/levees collapsing in the city was the problem.
They now have pump stations or locks blocking all of these canals at the lake, so I have hopes things will hold up much better for the city.

Damn I didn’t know that. That’s crazy if they would have closed the canals at the lake they would have saved a lot of people and properties.

Didn't know St. Bernard had a sister parish in Germany.
