I’ve been licensed for about 16 years - since early high school. I mostly do CW contesting and straight key.

I’ve pretty much decided against Baofeng as I’ve read that those with better quality equipment receive my transmissions with a distorted, high pitch.

A few guys I know have encouraged me to get a mobile, but to mount it in my shop as opposed to a vehicle to start. This seems to be a very cost effective way to get a good and easily customizable setup to get you going with the hobby.

There seems to be a split in the community between D-STAR and DMR. I’m not sure of the differences really.

Anyone know what kind of basic equipment I would need to get started with this?

Unfortunately the major manufacturers all use their own proprietary digital modes. My advice is to find out what is most popular in your area (use RepeaterBook) and go with that one.

Was this school TH Harris by chance?

No sir it was Avoyelles Vo Tech Inst. Cottonport La. Henry Hess was the instructor who was a Ham and well known in the community as the go to radio and electronics repairman in Avoyelles Parish. This was in the early 80s.

A bit off topic, my apologies to the OP, but could one of you amateur operators help me with something? I have a Uniden Home Patrol-II. It receives the EBR parish digital transmissions fine but the BTR city police are silent. Are they encrypted now? Any help is much appreciated.

Bought the study guide two weeks ago. Sadly, I have yet to do better than 50% on the tests. I have no electrical engineering background whatsoever, but I want my license.

This is a link to practice exams on the ARRL website. The account is free, but bookmark the link and remember your login info. ARRL Practice Exams

For the three license classifications (Technician, General, Extra) make sure you have the study materials for the correct question pool. They change every 4 years.

For the 1st two exams, Tech and General, I used the Gordon West study guides, flash cards and the practice exams on the ARRL website.

For the Extra Class exam I paid for and used the following website. HamTestOnline

When you pass the exam for one classification, they will let you take the exam for the next classification during the same testing session. So if you take the Tech exam and you pass, take the General right after. A lot of the information on those two are similar. If you do not pass a classification, I think that you can retake it during that session. No charge.

The Extra Class exam was way more difficult for me, but I passed it the first time. There are more questions on that one too.

I am in reality less than a novice and closer to a dilettante(dabbler).
