re: Am I the only one that was unaware that there is an anti-HIV drug available?

Absolutely we’re light years ahaead of where we started. HIV is not all that different than Diabetes now... someone on meds should live a relatively normal life expectency as you said.
Its still crazy to me that it’s merely a virus and with all the money and attention HIV has gotten over the years that a cure has not yet been found. IMO we’re within 5-10 years of a cure

I have the genetic variant that makes me resistant to HIV. So
We should mate

I know the cocktail came out about 20 years ago and it’s developer was a TIME magazine man of the year.
Amazing to think that no one thought Magic would make it to the year 2000 when he was diagnosed and 92

Sadly, I might be getting too old. Total waste of genetic potential.

The straights and the gays and the whites and the spades.....EVERYONE HAS AIDS

It's causing gays to engage in very risky behaviors which spreads other diseases and infections. It's protection, not prevention, yet it's being treated like a shield preventing any infections.
Mutual monogamy is superior. It's not exactly an effective method of prevention though. People act outside of their best interest quite frequently. Being smart about it in this way doesn't necessarily mean that they'll take it to an extreme. The HPV vaccine and availability of condoms at the local health units don't cause 12 year old girls to sleep around. But it does keep the ones who sleep around safer.
Should we as a society foot the bill for bad decisions? That's another topic entirely. But effective prevention doesn't necessarily encourage worsening of behavior.

what happens if people who are taking it have a higher incidence of renal failure? Or stroke? Or certain types of cancer at some point down the line?
Those patients have an informed discussion with a physician and decide if a night (or more) of high-risk sex is worth it. For some people it is. For others it is not. I have plenty of people who tell me, "yes, I smoke. I like to smoke. I understand it is going to kill me, but I don't care."
I disagree with them, but we live in a world where you have the autonomy to make these decisions. And you have an FDA that will pull the drug if it is horribly unsafe or new issues that weren't clear arise until further research absolves or damns it. These drugs have actually been around a while, though. The indication for their use in non-infected individuals at high risk for HIV-contraction is what is new.

It's almost impossible for a heterosexual male that doesn't do drugs to get the aids

I fear you have received bad information somewhere along the line.
CDC graphic from 2014 cases:
Now, if you meant it was almost impossible for a heterosexual male who is exclusively monogamous with few long-term partners with which he has known for a long time prior to engaging in sex with and still using protection then, then yes. You would be correct. But nearly 1 in 4 newly diagnosed cases is in a non-IV drug using heterosexual.
ETA: this assumes you live in the USA. This changes in other countries and parts of the world.

No disrespect, but I have to disagree here from personal experience.
I'm gay and single. I opt not to take prep for the risks involved -- I'd simply rather wear a condom than put a chemical in my body.
Since Prep has been available for HIV protection, my friends and I have all noticed a huge upswing in guys who are looking to engage in unsafe behavior. Maybe they're just more open about it now because they feel it's safer, but based on discussions I've had with other single guys, I tend to believe it's only given them a sense of invincibility to engage in behaviors they now feel are "safe."

Evil,
How did you learn this is true of you?
That was also why some people were immune to black plague.

A little surprised I had not heard of it. Wash DC is planning on cutting the HIV infection rate by 50% by the year 2020 through usage.
Not really interested in taking it because I am not in a high risk category since your Moms appear to be pretty clean.
I posted about it just last week. It's very effective.
My post about PrEP in Grindr Thread
quote:
The non-news of this news is that most of the users who put their Positive HIV status on there, don't really give a frick if anyone knows, as they are LOOKING for other Positive partners. The real shady shite is the number of guys saying they're on PrEP daily. That's like trusting a bitch you don't know to tell you to 'leave it in' b/c she's on birth control. PrEP works and is damn near 100% effective in preventing HIV transmission. HOWEVER, it's expensive as frick, not covered under most insurance, and it must be taken as prescribed.
