Sir, I regret that I have but one upvote to give.

I was working on that damn post for an hour between shite at work and I was hoping the thread would still be going strong by the time I got it up. I eventually wanted to get into stagnant wage "growth" and other stuff but I'll save that for the next time this topic comes up.

I would love to be the person who tells any of these borrowers that their loan(s) were forgiven. I'd tell them, "The good news is you no longer owe the $100,000 you borrowed to attend college. The bad news is now you owe the IRS $25,000 in tax on the forgiveness of debt income."

Most of the fricks that complain about not being able to find a job won't take the measures needed in order to get a job (applying for jobs outside of their current city.)

Truth.

If total tuition was $10k in 1985, it should be about $21k if it had followed overall inflation rates.

Instead, it with current increases, it is now about $60k.

If you are stupid enough to pay $60,000 a year for some of these awful universities, then that is on you. One of the best universities in the country, Rice University, is only $58,000/year and includes on campus housing and food.

Again, if you are stupid enough to go to a for-profit college and pay the same as a top-tier college like Rice or Harvard, then you are an idiot.

People should also understand what types of jobs their degree can truly get before they enroll. College isn't some hippy-trippy play time for adults.

I think forgiveness should be looked at for each individual and some people would apply. How are you using your degree, social workers, cops, firefighters, nurses, educators, people who are putting their education back into the community should be eligible. People who graduated with general studies and managing a Reebok Store at Tanger not so much.

I am completely against debt forgiveness short of becoming physically or mentally disabled and not capable of working. You made your bed, now sleep in it, and I work in college education as a lower-tier paid faculty member. My salary is significantly lower than my contemporaries in industry, so claiming faculty are overpaid is a bit ridiculous.

In the end, here's an idea. Be responsible for your actions and decisions. Just because we love to baby adults until their 30's now, doesn't mean they shouldn't be held accountable for being adults at 18.

I'd offer a lifetime sub-500 credit score for forgiveness.

I reified my federal student loan and cut 10 years off the note, interest rate from 8 to 5.5% and even lowered my monthly payment a few bucks. didn't cost a thing and I saved myself probably 20 thousand dollars with just a few phone calls and some online forms. I used Citizens Bank but I know there are a few other companies out there.

why would I ask tax payers to pay off a loan that I took out?

But they aren't asking taxpayers, they're asking the government.

No seriously, I've heard this.

And I'll bet they never figured out what they were saying.
