You can have controlled populations of both. Right now we have too many alligators.

Similar situation happened to a girl I grew up with. She had twin sons, one was autistic. He snuck out at night around Christmas 2017 or so and went to a creek behind their house. The water was up with winter storms and the boy was found dead when the mom got home from work that night. The dad had fallen asleep and forgot to do his normal door shutdown as part of the child’s autism procedure. Sad and tragic.

Gators have predators, especially their eggs and humans....

Nutria are fair game to anything that want to kill or eat them....plus the more you kill and have a trappers license, thats $5 a tail

How exactly does a gator inflict blunt force trauma?

The tail could have hit him

If in fact the story about the gator is true, it’s hard believe that gator didn’t drag the boy down and eat him.

Something isn’t adding up

Gators don’t like human flesh. They will drown their prey but then in the case of humans abandon them once they realize what it is. Most likely the poor kid got violently attacked and drowned and was left sitting there.

There was a fella from Slidell who was legit eaten by a 12 foot alligator after Hurricane Ida.

LINK

There was so much of him inside the alligator they were able to identify dental records, a rotator cuff surgery, and find his face.

Thanks for posting. This unfortunate end to this poor little boy does not add up. Why was tbe response time so long? The family said the kid had escaped before. Seems like a mercy kill

I could be wrong but I believe that was the first recorded death from an alligator in Louisiana history.

Generally speaking alligators don’t prefer humans. There’s no conspiracy here. The kid got attacked and drowned.

I wonder how many people get eaten and are simply reported missing indefinitely

It’s a sensory thing for most autistic kids/people. It’s calming to them and held stimulate/calm their brain. Autistic kids die in drownings all the time. They get to the water for the above reasons and then aren’t skilled/developed enough to swim.

That is the most likely, although unfortunately the scenario.

Similar to the kid that got dragged into the pond/lake at Disney World a few years ago

Like Florida, we have wayyyy too many gators. LDWF needs to declare an open season on alligators and let people harvest as many as they want till we reduce the population by at half. And alligator populations adjacent to areas inhabited by humans need to be the first place the open season is concentrated.

Yes to all of this but you're still going to get a surprising amount of people saying that alligators are native and they have just as much ,or more, right to raise little alligator families as humans. Same goes for sharks.

In Louisiana, alligator season started today and runs through Sept/Oct depending on which zone you’re in.

thanks. Why is there a season and why is there a limit?

about 10 years of no limit and no seasons would be a great thing.

Somehow we, and other wildlife, managed without them being present in huge numbers for the last 100years and did just fine.

There's a lake nearby I grew up on. In the last 15 years dept of fisheries decided it needed to be stocked with gator.

Why? "because alligators are native to the state its important to maintain biodiversity. Oh, don't swim at dusk and def don't let your dogs get in the water. Have a nice day!"

I sometimes wonder about what was the point of a kid’s life. Born autistic and get taken out by a gator at age 12. Has to be a deeper purpose there than what we see on the surface.

Your question would probably be answered better on the outdoor board.

I just know certain property owners and people that lease a certain amount of acres get a certain amount of tags to control the gator population.

It’s not just open season for any Joe Blow. You have to have certain tags, permissions and licenses

Now if there is a nuisance gator in your backyard or property you’re allowed to kill it year round but you better call DWLF ASAP
