You can’t even shoot someone if they break into your home in Europe

True, and from what I recall from my time in Norway, this only applies to the wilderness areas. I may be thinking of a different deal, but in the norther parts of the Nordic countries, natives can roam between countries freely and stay where they want.

I grew up nearby what was basically huge amounts of open land. It was owned by Crown Z but they had it open. Then assholes started dumping couches, trash and washing machines all over and soon it was fenced and leased to hunting clubs. IOW, we’d find a way to frick that up.

Man...I guess

I think you’re putting too much emphasis on the possibiliry of someone taking advantage, because we have lots of jackasses here. That’s just not how folks behave there.

Right, but you're asking if it could work here so I kinda have to think about how people behave here to answer that.

I’m sure it wouldn’t work here.

It probably could if it had been the norm for generations.

No.
It's called "private property " for a reason....

I'd bet 99.5% of homes are on small enough property that this idea is not relevant.

The culture is entirely different as well.

This could work in Japan, for I feel the Japanese would probably make the area nicer than it was before they arrived.
Perhaps the same mentality of national honor is evident in the Nordic countries, as well.

For better or worse, our country is about the "me first" mentality, which makes us think this wouldn't work here. You'd have many "get off my property" types, along with a bunch of frickups that would just as well trash your place as they would eat.

Most houses are probably on small parcels, but private individuals own larger chunks of land.

I don’t want “those we don’t speak of” camping on my land

Yes.

It's not the white people setting up meth operations, it'll be the black and brown people leaving the cities to play with berries in the boonies.

We have hundreds of thousands of square miles of national parks. No nation on Earth can touch the size, variation, and majesty of our national parks. We don't need that weird commie law, because of our protected natural parks.

National Parks are just one component of public lands.

National forests and BLM land make up a large chunk and dispersed camping is free on these lands.

Here is a website that lets you search free camping sites: https://freecampsites.net/

Just to be clear, this means if I own 100 acres of land, any bum can pitch a tent, fish in my pond and live there as long as they aren't within 250 feet of my house?

nobody can fish in your pond or hunt on your property without permission. unless it's wilderness, aka not cultivated, they cannot trespass.

If you're advocating for the erosion of private property rights, there's a political party with views that that align closely with yours.

We have enough public land in this country to allow for all the roaming one could desire. We have no need to diminish property rights to allow for roaming as some small nations have done.

It doesn't seem like a lack of wilderness or park access is a problem in the US.
