It was gasoline shortages that was the driving factor for lack of performance in the late 70's, early 80's.

That was the fastest US production car when it was made. That is not very fast in today’s standards. Not even close really. There are multiple sub 2 second US productions cars now.
Blueboy got 15 to zero upvotes on that, and you are already getting ratioed, but you are 100% right. The Grand National was a tick or two over 5s 0-60 not on a prepped track. It would be a drivers race with a BMW 230i today. The 230i is the entry level and a stock GN would get torched by a 240i. These are not "fast cars" today. My daily driver gets two 60 in HALF the time as a Grand National and can do it all day long on any surface, that is a modern day "fast" car. Good evidence on how fast modern cars are is the NHRA relaxed their safety requirements because so many stock cars were getting tossed out of drag strips because they were too fast to run without things like a cage.
In no "car guy's" world is a 5.0 0-60 car considered fast now. 5.0 isn't what I consider quick for an SUV. An SUV is quick when they are close or under 3.5 seconds.
The 2.0 claim is a bit outside since outside the Demon they are all exotic EVs and the Model S really isn't a true sub-2.0 car in 99.9999% of situations. The Demon has to be on a prepped track running E85 and have a very favorable DA to make its numbers, and it took literally years for the first owner to replicate the numbers at the track.

You are not wrong, era of EPA rules and plastic shite. The only bad arse cars I remember were 60s and early 70s cars

1973 was the first years cars were choked by the new regulations. Manufacturers hadn't figured them out yet, and the cars sucked.

Bought a 2011 C6 Grand sport vette a few months ago. It’s pretty quick. LS3 engine. 430+ hp. I really wanted a C3 vette (68-72) with chrome bumpers front and rear, but to get it comparable to mine performance and reliability, it would cost $100,000. Or 4 times what I paid for my C6.
And my vette is 14 years old, but will handle any muscle cars of that era. It’s just unfair to compare those cars to modern era.

1980 gas price: $1.19 vs median family income of $21,020, which would be like $4.40 today. So 1980 prices were 25% higher than today relative to income, while also driving vehicles with half the gas mileage compared to even a modern F-150.
After that gas prices deflated a little bit - and then held there for 2 decades (which is also an economic anomaly). Toward the end of that period the modern truck/SUV era was born with the (1994?) V8 RAM redesign marking the new pickup truck era.

The 80s didn't have muscle cars. There were a a handful of American production cars that were respectable.

You don't have to tell me, I remember. The part you didn't add was in the early 1970s gas was $0.35 per gallon. So the price of gas more than tripled that decade.
