He probably still could have attempted a shootout. He doesn't appear to have been too badly injured from the wreck and multiple firearms were in the car. Hell, the gun she used to shoot herself was probably within easy reach. He really didn't want to go out that way.

Honestly, I could see her having been shot by him, having shot herself purposefully, or having shot herself on accident when they crashed into the ditch.

Coroner already released his report and said she shot herself. I don't know details but if the gunshot was under the chin, it was almost certainly suicide. Also, if it went in the right temple, it was suicide (Casey couldn't have shot her from that angle while driving).
Also, I do not think they meant to call 911. It sounded like an Onstar type of call that happens automatically when a car is damaged. But this isn't the whole call, so I guess we'll find out for sure later on how it went down.

The only thing this escape has taught me is that if I'm ever getting close to being homeless I could always find some lonely corrections officers out there looking to spend a ton of money on me just for some companionship and a little dong every now and then. I might need to scope out the local and state jails at shift change to see the talent.
