We did this, it’s great. Sits in our kitchen and they have numbers in a Rolodex like the good old days. Connected to an app so we can shut it off anytime and restrict who can call/be called. Has a squiggly cord they bitch about and everything! We’re a no smartphone until driving household as well. We might get them “dumb phones” as they get into high school for emergencies, but nothing else. Parents have really rallied around this, our whole friend group from their school is the same so it won’t be like our kids are the only ones being treated this way.

Yep. Same here, and most if not all of her classmates’ parents are of the same thinking. Maybe I’m naive, but I don’t think we’d see the same type of peer buy-in at a public school.

Hell no where we live. We have good public schools but moved them private a couple years ago and the biggest difference is parental involvement and engagement with each other.

Wealthy kids are prohibited from playing with tablets and don’t get smartphones until 15-16.

This is complete and utter bullshite. They *all* get tablets thrown at them as soon as they can hold them. Lincoln Navigator or Nissan Altima, no difference.

Not true. See my posts in this thread. There is a movement to more of an analog lifestyle for some groups of parents/kids.

One thing that disappoints me about my kids is their sense of direction. When they get in the car they go straight to their phone, they're not looking around at their surroundings and not observing driving directions.

I usually tell them to put your phone down and just look at surroundings and direction I'm driving.

Case in point, a friend of ours' daughter didn't know how to get to a street that was just down the street from them...

It has yet to reach the backwaters of Plano, Frisco, Prosper, Dallas, Houston, Katy, Fulshear, Sugarland, etc.

Because you join a group on facebook that talks about raising kids that aren't zombies doesn't mean there is a "movement." I know teachers and principals in a lot of school districts, and I watch the zombied out kids on the regular, every fricking day. You may wish it was true, but like people that claim sardines are superfoods that cure cancer and are the perfect protein, you're in a bubble.

I’m talking about people in real life in our social circle in Lafayette, not some fairytale land in an online group.

As a follow up to this, my kid’s school just banned social media for all students enrolled at the school
