Alabama school's hilarious 'opt out' fundraising letter goes viral
quote:
An Alabama mom is applauding her 16-year-old daughter's high school for taking a unique approach to student fundraising this year — asking for donations directly instead of forcing parents and children to participate in bake sales, sell products or spend hours making cold calls.
Briana Leggett Woods, a mother of two from Auburn, was preparing for another stressful year of "brown envelopes, emails and Sign Up Genius notices" when she returned from her tenth-grade daughter's "Back to School Night." But as the mom shuffled through all of Auburn High School's orientation papers, one form, in particular, caught her eye.
"Don't want to sell anything, bake anything, buy anything or generally avoid fundraising of any kind? We feel the same way!!" the form, titled the "opt out" fundraiser, read.

We had the option to sell magazines or just hand over $75. Is that not the same thing?

My son came home yesterday with beef sticks to sell for FFA.... has asked me if I could sell them at work. I handed him $30 and told him to split them with his sister and enjoy them. I'd gladly opt out, hell I'd send a lot more than $75 if I didn't have to sell/volunteer for anything.

I'm all for this. I just spent an hour this week filling out some stupid fundraising forms for my twins. I'd rather them just ask outright for money than all of these stupid schemes. I wonder how much these fundraising companies leach from the the efforts anyway.

yep, just send money. no need to peddle chocolate

This was my philosophy when kid was in school. I would buy it. I was glad when they just did away with fundraiser and went to a donation.

side note - the big coupon books that are so popular?
they were started by a lady in Pelham and printed in Birmingham fr a long time
used to be called "Enjoy the City"; changed names to "Shop Around" recently; not their 1st name change
those people are criminal scumbags, they have stiffed their last 2 printers, declared bankruptcy and started up at least twice that I know about
most companies in the school fundraising business are highly unethical (I just happen to have personal knowledge of those guys)

I am not going to send money to the school to be fricking wasted. They do that enough with my tax dollars.
Instead I'll offer my child a triple chore allowance for a week if they throw the damn fundraiser in the trash.

The form is speaking to the audience that can just afford $15. It is trying to communicate effectively grammar be damned.

Do you really think a school needs thousands of extra dollars to do a fricking field day?

FFA fundraising isn't just about money. It's also about salesmanship and learning how to represent yourself in public, something this generation badly needs. Let the kid try to do it himself.
