Observation this morning.

Three wheelchair occupants pushed passed me in security and once they get to the body scanner they rise (completely unassisted) out of their chair and walk through only to sit back down in their chair.

Four wheelchair occupants at the boarding gate get wheeled down the jet bridge only to walk completely unassisted to their seats.

All of them were women carrying some weight. All capable of walking.

These capable passengers are not only unnecessarily occupying wheelchair ‘agents’ but also delaying multiple processes.

Why?

Some folks genuinely need the wheelchairs because they can’t walk as far or with the pace of airport traffic. DadWafer was one of them.

Some people just abuse the system bc they’re fat. These women are four of them.

Just an observation....

They claim they need one so they can get through security faster and board first. No one at the airport is going to question them at the risk of violating some sort of ADA law; it’s easier to just push them around with an $8/hr worker. Ever notice someone who needs a wheelchair at the departure airport but not the destination? It’s because they would have to wait for everyone to deplane before they can get the wheelchair. They don’t want to wait so they just walk off. It doesn’t happen all the time but have definitely seen it before.

Why? Preferred Boarding among other things. And to defend them, walking 10 yards isn't the same as walking 1/2 mile through a terminal. I would not want my 80 year old grandmother attempting to walk through an airport terminal.

I dread the countdown to door closure. I watch every person entering the plane and hope I don't get a morbidly obese person squeezing into their chair beside me and squeezing me into next week.

I've used one in Atlanta because of inflamed knee. I could walk but it was extremely painful. I'm good now but was grateful for the help. Don't judge circumstances you know nothing about.

Good point.

Connecting at a major airport is a shite ton of walking, and usually at a faster pace. I’m sure most older folks who otherwise get around okay still can’t handle airport levels.

I missed a connecting flight a week ago and nearly fell out from the run involved in attempting to catch it. It’s no joke going from the very last gate in one terminal to the very last gate in another. Especially with a full backpack on.

Wafer is 100% correct- I flew over 1.4 M miles when I had a traveling job- the people abusing the system was one of my pet peeves.

The incident I remember the best-
4 ladies- obviously NOTHING wrong with them- no small children, no disabilities, no nothing- other than their carry ons. Watched them get on board before everyone else when they called “families with small children and people needing extra time”. I asked the gate agent when they called first and she said “Yeah, you know...if they request it, we gotta give it to them and it screws the whole works up....but we can’t deny it if they ask”

Eh I’d be fine with it.

I have zero desire to be one of the first ones on a plane where I have to sit there even longer than I already do. Plus, if they are the types of people to spend 10 minutes shuffling their belongings around and putting bags into overheads, let them go separately than me so I don’t have to stand in the aisle waiting on them.

Blows my mind people take so long to put their bag up and sit down. They start taking out headphones and shite. Have that stuff in your hands already before you board.

Fascinating

I’ll have my scribe add this to my “things I’d experience if I ever set foot in an airport terminal” journal I keep on the private jet.

You mean they were fatties who used their fatness to get preferential treatment.
